The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League team championships took center stage this week at Wildlife Lanes in Lower Burrell and Family Bowl-Away in Butler.
But next week, the individual bowlers take over and battle for titles at the WPIBL boys and girls singles championships.
The boys singles event will be Wednesday (Feb. 21) at North Versailles Bowl, and the girls singles will be Thursday (Feb. 22) at Sims Lanes in Beaver Falls.
To qualify for the boys singles tournament, a bowler needed to achieve an average of 170 or better with at least 21 games bowled over the 10 weeks of team play. For the girls, the average was 140 with 21 or more games.
According to the listing of averages on the WPIBL website through Week 10, 116 boys and 82 girls met the qualifying requirements.
The WPIBL added the singles tournament in 2016.
Plum senior Meghan Christman is the defending girls champion. She defeated Mustangs teammate Shannon Small, a sophomore, in last year's bracket finals.
Valley junior Shaolin Barr and Greensburg Salem sophomore Mattie Mae White were semifinalists, and Canon-McMillan senior Jessica Cadez earned a spot in the six-bowler bracket playoffs.
Christman (East), White (Southeast) and Cadez (Southwest) all finished the regular season with the best average in their sections. Small finished second in average in the East section, while Barr took fourth in the Northeast.
East Allegheny senior Tyler Getsy is a returning semifinalist from last year's WPIBL boys singles tournament.
He finished the 2017-18 regular season with the top average in the Center section (210.07) and is fourth overall.
Leading the way among the boys singles qualifiers is Norwin sophomore C.J. Turek (216.67 for 21 games), Kiski Area sophomore William Perroz (214.80 for 30 games) and Hempfield sophomore Luke Vukovich (214.04 for 26 games).
