Wednesday morning’s winter weather forced Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League officials to postpone the boys singles championship tournament to next Wednesday at 3 p.m. The event will remain at Wildlife Lanes in Lower Burrell.
Weather permitting, Thursday’s girls singles tournament at Sims Lanes in Beaver Falls is on as scheduled and will begin at 3 p.m.
The WPIBL singles field features bowlers who completed a minimum of 21 out of his or her team’s 30 regular-season games.
The two bowlers with highest averages in each section – 18 boys and 18 girls – automatically qualified, and the rest of the field was determined by a cutoff average – 170 or higher for the boys and 140 or higher for the girls.
For regional singles, set for March 8 at North Versailles Bowl, the field will consist of 74 boys and 74 girls, including 12 girls and eight boys from outside the WPIBL. As with the WPIBL singles tournament, the top two from each WPIBL section in the regular season automatically qualify for regionals.
Those who finish in the top 40 at the WPIBL singles tournament, minus the automatic qualifiers, also will advance to regionals. The rest of the regional qualifiers from the WPIBL will be determined through regular-season averages with the 21-game minimum still in effect.
