WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit part of Thursday’s 3 things to watch in high school sports

The WPIAL will host a big event on the field Saturday as eight football teams head to Heinz Field to play for district gold.

However, the WPIAL is hosting another big event Thursday, though it is off the field.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit, once again being held at the Sen. John Heinz History Center and Sports Museum in the Strip District.

The idea is to teach area high school students their actions and words matter with the hopes they can become role models for their teammates and younger athletes who look up to them.

The league’s first summit was held in 2008.

One-hundred schools will be represented with more than 600 student-athletes in attendance.

Scheduled to appear as guest speakers are Former WPIAL/collegiate/professional athlete Dorin Dickerson, former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Chris Hoke and Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper.

Working overtime

One of the more eye-catching records in the PIHL is in the North/West Division.

Shaler has played five games, three of which have gone into overtime.

The Titans’ success rate in OT is not good, as they have lost all three overtime contests.

But in high school hockey, an overtime loss earns a point, so Shaler sits in the middle of the seven-team division with a mark of 1-1-0-3 for five points.

Thursday, Shaler faces South/East division leader Latrobe.

More pucks

One of the top Thursday high school hockey matchups is Meadville at West Allegheny.

This is a battle of two of the top three teams in the North Division.

Montour leads the way with 14 points, followed by Meadville with a record of 5-1 for 10 points.

Right behind the defending champion Bulldogs is West Allegheny. The Indians are 4-1 and tied for third place with North Hills with eight points.

The puck drops at 9:10 p.m. at the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale.
