WPIAL singles tournament part of 3 things to watch Thursday in high school sports

The first WPIAL championship of the fall sports season begins Thursday with the start of the 2018 girls singles tennis championships.
The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals of the Class AAA tournament will take place at North Allegheny and the Class AA brackets will play out at Shady Side Academy.
There will be a new champion crowned in Class AAA after the graduation of 2017 winner Maria Santilli of Norwin.
The top-seed in Class AAA is Ashley Huang of North Allegheny, who fell in the district semifinals a year ago.
In Class AA, Laura Greb hopes to takes her second step toward a possibly historic golden run.
The Knoch sophomore did not lose a set in winning the WPIAL championship last year as a freshman.
The finals and consolation will be held Friday at Shady Side Academy.
City League football
Week four of the high school football season kicks off Thursday night with a City League contest between Westinghouse and Carrick at Cupples Stadium.
Both teams were winless a week ago, but Westinghouse edged Allderdice in overtime 28-22 for the Bulldogs’ first win of the season that evened their district record at 1-1.
Carrick had a nonconference game but lost big to Linsly School 48-7.
The Raiders are 0-2 in City League play as they hope to be competitive for the first time this season. Carrick has been outscored 185-14 in their four losses.
Since getting a forfeit win in 2016, Carrick has lost two straight to Westinghouse by a combined score of 102-8.
Fighting for first
Nearing the midway point of section play, there are three girls volleyball matches Thursday between undefeated teams with first place at stake.
In Section 3-3A, Laurel Highlands visits Thomas Jefferson. The Mustangs are 5-0 while the Jaguars trail by a half-game with a 4-0 section mark.
A pair of 4-0 teams in Section 4-2A collide in McKeesport where Serra Catholic hosts Seton LaSalle.
Finally in Class A, Carmichaels travels to Geibel Catholic as both the Mighty Mikes and Gators are 5-0 atop Section 2.
