WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Five 2013

Another exciting week of 2013 WPIAL football is in the books. And while it was not as historic as last week, it was a week full of terrific defensive performances, late heroics… and one really meaningful punt. Some big showdowns are on the horizon in Week Six. But for now, let’s take a look at the top plays from Week Five.

#1 Gateway 22, Hempfield 16

In a big matchup of Foothills Conference foes, Gateway survived another scare from a team they have historically dominated, beating Hempfield 22-16 with some late-game heroics. Down 16-14 with 209 left, Gateway would start deep in the shadow of their own goalposts. First-year starting Quarterback Jimmy Moore would take over after that, connecting on all four of his passes, including a 7-yard strike to Delvon Randall with 39 seconds left give the Gators the win. The performance earned Moore the award for McDonald’s Quarterback of the Week for Week Five.

#2 West Allegheny 13, Central Valley 7

Friday night’s showdown in the Parkway Conference could have been a preview of the AAA Championship at Heinz Field in November. Who knows how that one will turn out, but what we do know is that West Allegheny’s defense put on a show for the ages against Central Valley in a tight 13-7 victory. The Indians allowed just 51 total yards of offense to Central Valley and put the game away with a perfectly executed trick play. Tied 7-7 in the 3rd quarter, West Allegheny QB Andrew Koester would throw a lateral to Tory Delmonico, who would then throw the ball forward to an open Robert Threet for a 32-yard touchdown.

#3 Quaker Valley 14, Steel Valley 7

It is not too often will a punt (yes, a punt) make the Top Plays of the Week, but for Quaker Valley, a great punt was exactly what they needed to secure a huge 14-7 win over Steel Valley on Friday night. Quaker Valley’s do-it-all Quarterback Dane Jackson, who ran for 149 yards and a score, would blast a 50-yard punt with 20 seconds left in the game, pinning Steel Valley deep and securing the win for the Quakers, who are now 5-0 and face a showdown for first place with dominant South Fayette in Week Six.

#4 Laurel 20, Union 19

Facing a 12-point second half deficit, Laurel would rally behind the legs of Matty Conway, prevailing with an important 20-19 victory over Union in Class A’s Big Seven Conference. Conway, who finished with a hard-earned 102 yards on 31 carries. But Conway’s biggest rush came in the 4th Quarter, when he powered in from five yards out, tying the game at 19-19. Noah Wertz would tack on the extra point and the Spartans’ defense would do the rest, keeping Laurel in 3rd place in the Conference.

#5 Avonworth 35, Apollo-Ridge 27

In a showdown of two offenses that are averaging more than 37 points per game this season, it is no surprise that this Eastern Conference battle for second place became a bit of a shootout. But it was Avonworth’s defense that put the nail in the coffin of a potential Apollo-Ridge comeback in a meaningful 35-27 victory on Friday night. After seeing their 21-point lead cut to 8, Avonworth’s Moses Giles would come up with a 10-yard sack of Jesse Zelonka on 3rd and 19 with the Vikings driving to tie the game.
