WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week 7

Any victory during the stretch run warms you up from the cold…But a win on a comeback in the fourth or even fifth quarter is as good as gold…For these plays were for the winning teams like a little slice of heaven…While at the same time being recognized for top plays of Week Seven.

Erie McDowell Trojans 19 – North Hills Indians 14

All signs were pointing to an undefeated showdown in the Class AAAA Northern Seven in Week Nine between rivals North Allegheny and North Hills. Only problem is, nobody told the conferences newest member, Erie McDowell. Trailing 14-13 in the fourth quarter, Trojans quarterback Colin Kimball hit Greg Garmon on a 43-yard strike that was the difference in the Indians first loss of the season, 19-14.

Belle Vernon Leopards 10 – West Mifflin Titans 0

OK, technically this wasn't a comeback. But this key Class AAA Big Eight Conference game entered the fourth quarter scoreless between West Mifflin and Belle Vernon. The Leopards finally cracked the scoreboard when Matt Green scored from one-yard out for the game-winning and only touchdown of the contest in a 10-0 whitewash of the Titans.

Aliquippa Quips 20 – Beaver Bobcats 14 in Overtime

After a furious 11-point fourth quarter comeback by Beaver against visiting Aliquippa in the battle for the top spot in the Class AA Midwestern Conference, the two teams ended regulation tied at 14-14. After the Quips score first on a Dravon Henry 5-yard run, the Bobcats had three plays take the ball down to the two yard line before quarterback Christian Herstine slipped and fell on a fourth down rollout to end the thriller at 20-14 in overtime.

Ellwood City Wolverines 14 – Laurel Spartans 13

After finally ending a long losing streak that was approaching 30 consecutive losses a year ago, 2010 has been a dream season of sorts for Ellwood City. They took a huge step toward a possible playoff berth in the Class AA Midwestern Conference when quarterback Gino Ceriani scored his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run with just over five minutes left in the game, plus the Scott Lewis extra point lifted the Wolverines to a 14-13 win over the Laurel Spartans.
