The 2010 WPIAL football season hit the midway point with Week Five…For some teams its time to hit the gas hard, while for others, they just want to survive…Here are four teams that needed big scores to keep alive their winning streak…The plays were so clutch, you guessed it, they made Plays of the Week!
Peters Township Indians 21 – Bethel Park Black Hawks 14
MSA Sports Matt Vandriak and Greg Kuntz on the call
A year ago, the Peters Township Indians started hot and then went ice cold once the Great Southern Conference play began. They were not looking to repeat history. Having won three straight and trailing by one point with less than five and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter, Indians quarterback Austin Hancock called his own number up the gut and raced 22-yards for a score to lift PT to a conference opening 21-14 victory over the Bethel Park Black Hawks.
Knoch Knights 17 – Hampton Talbots 14
The Hampton Talbots Sports Networks Dennis Fischer on the call
Knoch has been one of the surprise stories in Class AAA this season, carrying a perfect record into this Greater Allegheny Conference road test. After going back and forth with two scores each, Cory Wood supplied the game winner, breaking a 14-14 tie with a 33-yard field goal in the third quarter that stood up for the Knights in a 17-14 win over the Hampton Talbots.
Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 7 – Mount Pleasant Vikings 0
WLSW-FM 103.9's Stan Wall on the call
In 2009, Greensburg Central Catholic and Mount Pleasant played one of the top games of the season as the Vikings beat the Centurions 36-35 in Overtime. The 2010 meeting was just as close, with just a little more of a defensive feel to it. GCC's Bobby Noble hit Justin Kempka with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 3:28 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Centurions remained undefeated with a 7-0 shutout of the visiting Vikings.
Brentwood Spartans 28 – Fort Cherry Rangers 21
WJPA-FM 95.3's Mark Uriah and Bill Dukett on the call
After fighting hard for four quarters only to see this Class A Black Hills Conference contest tied at 21, it took only two plays in Overtime for Brentwood to improve to 5-0 for the season. Spartans quarterback Cory Bauer hit Spencer Hubsch on a 10-yard scoring strike on the first play of OT, then the Brentwood defense picked off a Fort Cherry pass on their first play to seal the deal on a 28-21 thriller for the Spartans.
