As we enter the “Stretch Run,” this week’s edition of Plays of the Week features two gigantic upsets and one near-monumental 'eye-brow raiser' of the top team in Class AAA.

#1 – Montour Spartans 40 – Blackhawk Cougars 35

After Blackhawk had pulled off a dramatic fake extra-point and taken a 35-34 lead with less than three minutes left in the game, it appeared that the #1 team in Class AAA was going to be upset by a Cougars team that has only won one game this season. But the defending champs stayed cool, putting together a 63-yard, game-winning drive, capped off by a Ryan Mihelcic touchdown pass to Justin Hill from 11 yards out. Mihelcic was huge on the final drive, using his arm and legs and overcoming a tough penalty that took away a touchdown pass to Devin Wilson a couple plays earlier. The loss is a tough one for Blackhawk, who have now lost four games by five points or less. Montour is now 7-0 on the season and remains in first place in the tough AAA Parkway Conference.

#2 – Bethel Park Black Hawks 24 – Upper St. Clair Panthers 17

Bethel Park had allowed 99 points to Upper St. Clair in their last two meetings. In this one, they gained just three first downs and 107 yards of offense. Yet somehow, some way, the Black Hawks were able to pull off the upset of the weekend thanks to three prominent plays on special teams. Chiante Pryor returned one kickoff for a touchdown and another deep into USC territory, which led to the game-tying touchdown. However the biggest special teams play was when Bethel Park’s blockers were able to tackle USC Punter Jesse Slinger in the 4^th Quarter after he mishandled the snap. The big special teams play would lead to Black Hawks Quarterback Levi Metheny sneaking in for the winning touchdown and the upset of the #2 Panthers.

#3 – Frazier Commodores 21 – Beth-Center Bulldogs 14

After blowing a 13-0 lead, the Commodores would pull off the second-biggest upset of the weekend, knocking off #3 Beth-Center. The Bulldogs rallied in the second half, taking a 14-13 lead, but Charlie Manack would find Michael Luce from three yards out with under four minutes to play, giving the Commodores the win. Frazier, now 5-2, has defeated two consecutive unranked opponents, having beaten a 5-0 Avella team the week prior.
