Belle Vernon sophomore Devin Whitlock, a two-sport standout who transferred from Monessen, is eligible to play football and basketball this upcoming school year.
Whitlock had a hearing Monday before the WPIAL board, which declared him eligible with a split vote, said WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley.
The WPIAL originally declared Whitlock ineligible June 18 based on the transfer paperwork submitted by the two schools. Monessen had contested the transfer as athletically motivated but those allegations weren’t substantiated in Monday’s hearing.
“(Monessen administrators) made their case, but the information that they provided was not substantial enough for the board to find otherwise,” O’Malley said.
Whitlock switched schools in May.
As a freshman, Whitlock earned all-conference honors in football and all-section in basketball.
The 5-foot-8 guard averaged 18 points for the Greyhounds basketball team and accounted for 22 touchdowns in football. He had 27 receptions for 504 yards and six touchdowns, carried 81 times for 685 yards and eight scores, and also threw for eight more.
