Last week, the WPIAL crowned Central Catholic’s Jimmy Meyers and Riverside’s Skyler Fox as 2018 Class AAA and AA individual boys golf champions, respectively. The title was the third straight for Fox, a junior.
On Tuesday, the first step toward crowning boys golf team champions begins with the Class AAA and AA semifinals.
In Class AAA, eight teams at two different sites will tee off and the top three finishers will qualify for Thursday’s district team finals.
The semifinals field at the Buffalo Golf Club includes Blackhawk, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Mt. Lebanon, Penn-Trafford, Seneca Valley, Shady Side Academy and South Fayette.
The eight squads teeing off at the Village Green Golf Course are Baldwin, Belle Vernon, Central Catholic, Latrobe, Moon, Peters Township, Pine-Richland and Thomas Jefferson.
In Class AA, the nine teams attempting to advance to the finals from the Butler’s Golf Course Woodside are Bentworth, Carmichaels, Ellwood City, Keystone Oaks, North Catholic, Riverview, Sewickley Academy, South Side and Uniontown.
The nine at the Meadowwink Golf Course are Burrell, Eden Christian, Elizabeth Forward, Greensburg Central Catholic, Hopewell, Mt. Pleasant, Quaker Valley, Riverside and South Park.
Tee times in both classifications on a warm Thursday morning are at 9 a.m.
Boys pitch play
With time running low on the regular season in high school soccer, three matches are set for Tuesday that are battles for position at the top of each of the sections.
In Section 4-2A, North Catholic visits Quaker Valley. The Quakers are a perfect 9-0 in section play and enjoy a half-game lead over the Trojans (9-1). The only section loss suffered by North Catholic was the earlier matchup between the two in which Quaker Valley won 5-0.
There are a pair of key Class A contests Tuesday.
In Section 2, Greensburg Central Catholic visits Winchester Thurston in an afternoon fray. The Centurions are 8-0 and enjoy a half-game lead over the Bears (9-1) lost to GCC, 3-1, in their first meeting.
In Section 4, Seton LaSalle (7-1) hosts Bishop Canevin (4-1-2). The Rebels can take a big step toward a section crown if they can avenge their only loss of section play, 2-1 last month to the Crusaders.
Three for third
While Serra Catholic (8-0) and Seton LaSalle (8-1) have the top two spots sealed in Section 4-2A girls volleyball, the battle for third place is hot and heavy between three teams.
Both Keystone Oaks and Steel Valley are 4-4 while Carlynton is right behind at 4-5. On Tuesday, the Golden Eagles host the Cougars while the Ironmen visit South Allegheny.
The top four teams in each section qualify for the district playoffs.
Also on Tuesday in volleyball, a share of first place in Section 2-3A is at stake when Montour visits Chartiers Valley. The Spartans are 8-2 and trail the Colts (9-1) by one game.
