Wilson, DeGregorio tabbed to coach Baldwin basketball teams

Four coaches were hired April 11 in the Baldwin High School athletic program.

Two are new to the Baldwin-Whitehall area, and two have longtime links to the district.

Eugene Wilson, who coached at Westinghouse, and Kyle DeGregorio, a Baldwin guidance counselor, were hired as the boys and girls basketball coaches, respectively.

Joe Urmann (boys) and Nikki Feathers (girls) submitted letters of resignation as Baldwin's basketball coaches after the 2017-18 season.

Also hired were Dave Zinski, replacing Allen Duda as boys soccer coach; and Kim Klinger, replacing Ryan Johnson as coach of boys and girls swimming.

Zinski previously coached at Carlynton and North Hills. Klinger served as an assistant at Baldwin in recent years after a stint as head coach in the 1990s.

Wilson coached at Westinghouse the past two seasons, compiling a 31-17 record.

The Bulldogs reached the PIAA second round in 2017-18.

He previously coached for three years at Wilkinsburg, his alma mater, and was a four-year scholarship player at Pitt-Johnstown.

“I am elated to be the head coach at Baldwin,” Wilson said. “I'm honored and excited about the opportunity. My staff and I will bring energy, passion, knowledge and a desire for the student-athlete to be successful through this program.”

Baldwin's boys basketball team has winning records the past three seasons, including two WPIAL playoff appearances.

“We believe there is excellent talent coming up to establish a consistent program that teaches the kids to win on and off the court,” Wilson said. “Because of the great support that exists at Baldwin, I believe this is more than doable.”

DeGregorio coached the Belle Vernon boys basketball team the past five seasons, posting a 62-52 record with two WPIAL playoff appearances.

The Leopards won two section titles, finished 18-7 and 17-7 the last two years, and advanced to the PIAA playoffs in 2017-18.

DeGregorio previously coached the boys basketball team at Baldwin from 2002-11.

During his tenure, the Highlanders compiled a 112-99 record — including two 19-win seasons — with four WPIAL playoff appearances.

He has 26 years of head-coaching experience. He also has coached at Ephrata, Manheim Central and York Vo-Tech in Eastern Pennsylvania.
