What to watch for in WPIAL sports on Sept. 17, 2024: Peters Township, Upper St. Clair battle for 1st place in section

Last season, Upper St. Clair won the Section 2-4A boys soccer crown, finishing four points head of Peters Township in the standings.
Both the Indians and Panthers lost in the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals.
Now the Route 19 neighbors are tied for first place and are ready to square off for the first time in 2024 on Tuesday when Peters Township hosts Upper St. Clair.
Both teams have built an early two-game Section 2-4A lead with 3-0 section records.
The Panthers are 4-2-1 overall and have won three straight and yielded five goals all season.
The Indians are 6-1-1, winners of four in a row, and have only given up four goals this fall.
Another big boys soccer showdown Tuesday has Avonworth visiting Central Valley with first place in Section 2-2A up for grabs.
The Antelopes are 6-0 in the section, 6-1 overall, and have won four straight matches since their only loss of the season to Moon.
The Warriors are 5-0 in the section and a perfect 7-0 overall while outscoring their opponents 36-8 this season.
In Section 4-A boys soccer, Springdale (6-0) hosts Trinity Christian (4-1-1).
The Dynamos are 3-0 atop the section while the Falcons are tied for second place with Winchester Thurston (2-2-1) at 2-0-1.
All knotted up
Tuesday is a busy day of WPIAL girls volleyball section action, including some tiebreakers in Section 3-4A.
Hempfield has the early lead in the section with a 2-0 record while Connellsville sits at 0-2 after two section matches.
The other four teams in the section are all deadlocked at 1-1 and all four are set to square off Tuesday.
Plum (4-1) visits Penn-Trafford (2-4) and Latrobe (4-1) hosts Norwin (2-4).
The top spot in Section 3-3A is on the line when Ringgold visits Thomas Jefferson.
The Rams are in first place with a 4-0 section record, a half-game ahead of both the Jaguars and Laurel Highlands.
Qualifying on the links
Most of the WPIAL boys individual golf sectional qualifiers were Monday, but three will take place Tuesday.
Section 1-3A will be held at the Birdsfoot Golf Club in Freeport with a target score of 80, Section 4-3A takes place at the Meadowink Golf Course in Murrysville with a target score of 81, and the Section 6-3A qualifiers are at the Moon Golf Club with a target score of 79.
The 2024 WPIAL Class 3A boys golf individual championships are at the Southpoint Golf Club in Canonsburg on Sept. 24.
All six girls individual golf sectionals are set for Tuesday as well.
• Section 1-3A is at the Strawberry Ridge Golf Course in Harmony with a target score of 87.
• Section 2-3A is at the Hickory Heights Golf Club in Bridgeville with a target score of 89.
• Section 3-3A is at Victory Hills Golf Course in Elizabeth with a target score of 88.
• Section 4-3A is at Murrysville Golf Club with a target score of 89.
• Section 1-2A is at Norvelt Golf Club in Mt. Pleasant with a target score of 94.
• Section 2-2A is at Fox Run Golf Course in Beaver Falls with a target score of 92.
The 2024 WPIAL Class 3A and 2A girls golf individual championships are at the Butler Country Club in Butler on Sept. 30.
