The two most successful football programs in City League history will kick off the District 8 schedule at George Cupples Stadium on the South Side to get the ball rolling on Week 2 of the high school football season Thursday.

Last year was a dream season for Westinghouse, winning the City League title, beating Chestnut Ridge, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Central Clarion, Farrell and Steel Valley to improve to 14-0 and reaching the PIAA Class 2A championship game before losing to Southern Columbia, 37-22.

The Bulldogs became only the second City League school to play for a state football championship and the first since Perry lost to Berwick 25 years earlier in 1997.

The Commodores have the only PIAA championship in District 8 history when they beat Berwick in the 1989 Triple-A finals, 20-8.

Westinghouse did not play last week after an impressive 28-0 win in Week Zero over Clairton.

Bulldogs junior quarterback Khalil Green was 10 of 16 passing for 160 yards while junior running back Khalil Mitchell had a pair of touchdown runs.

Perry is 0-2 this season after losing 47-2 to Trinity in Week Zero and falling in a close one to Wheeling Central Catholic last week, 20-18. Senior Julian Walker was one of three Commodores to score touchdowns.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Big cats square off

Defending WPIAL 3A boys soccer champion Moon is tied for first place in Section 2 with Montour at 3-0.

Right on their heels is a South Fayette team that has yet to lose this season and is 3-0-1 in section play.

On Thursday, the Tigers visit the Lions while Montour travels to Chartiers Valley (2-1).

Other key games in boys soccer Thursday:

• Latrobe (3-0) visits Plum (2-0) in a battle of Section 4-3A unbeaten teams.

• Bentworth (2-0) is at Charleroi (2-0) in a clash for first place in Section 2-A.

• Springdale (3-0) hosts Winchester Thurston (1-0) in a Section 3-A battle for first place.

• Carlynton, Serra Catholic and Seton LaSalle are all 1-0 in Section 4-A. The Cougars visit the Eagles for at least a share of the top spot.

Two putting

There are two weeks remaining in the 2023 WPIAL boys golf regular season with section races heating up in both classifications.

In Section 4-3A, Peters Township is undefeated and in first place, one game ahead of Mt. Lebanon.

The two meet at the Mt. Lebanon Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.

In Section 2-2A, Greensburg Central Catholic sits alone in first place, one game in front of Ligonier Valley.

The Rams are looking to forge a tie when they visit the Centurions.

GCC beat LV in their first meeting Aug. 17.
