Westmoreland notebook: Yough’s Shoaf lands in football all-star game

Two-time WPIAL rushing champion Dustin Shoaf will play in an all-star game after all.

The senior from Yough received a late invite to the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game.

The game will be 2 p.m. May 5 at Mansion Park in Altoona. The West team had 22 players initially selected who either declined to play or were moved to the Big 33 Classic.

A Mercyhurst recruit, Shoaf (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) rushed for 5,053 yards and 48 touchdowns at Yough, leading all WPIAL rushers in yards during the regular season the past two years.

Other WPIAL players set to play for the West team include Bryant Johnson of West Mifflin, Jack Colecchi and Troy Kuhn of Kiski Area, Tyler Brennan of North Hills, Dylan Vaniel and Konota Gaskins of McKeesport, Mike Dorundo and Anthony Cerminara of Pine-Richland, Tom Elia of South Fayette, Jeffrey Bonnette of Shaler, Riley Noble of Canon-McMillan, Armand Gustave and Jordy Boswell of Penn Hills, Todd Hill of Steel Valley, Dante Caputo of North Allegheny, Dom Dodson of Central Catholic, Daylin Brickner of Central Catholic and Jayden Lucas of Woodland Hills.

West coaches are Larry Wiser (head coach) of Clarion, and Ron Butschle (Seneca Valley), Don Fyfe (Shade), Jon LeDonne (Penn Hills), Brad Orlando (McDowell) and Greg Page (Homer-Center).

P-T Hall of Fame

Penn-Trafford announced its 2019 Warrior Football Hall of Fame class.

The committee scours over decades of program history, dating back to players from Trafford and Penn Joint, which later became Penn-Trafford, to come up with a well-balanced class.

This year’s honorees:

• Tim Cortazzo (Penn-Trafford Class of 2007);

• Mark Ferguson (Penn-Trafford, 1992);

• Kurt Johnson (Penn-Trafford, 1999);

• Jim Santimauro (Penn-Trafford, 1993);

• Marty Schneider (Trafford, 1962);

• Sonny Thomas (Coach, Penn-Trafford, 1980-86, 95-2001, ‘11-13);

• 1968 Trafford Tomahawks (Coached by Steven Zigarovich).

The committee also announced a special award that will go to Sam DeNillo Sr. He coached in the Penn-Trafford Midget Athletic Association for 42 years. In the future, notable contributors will receive the “Sam DeNillo Sr. Award.”

The newest class will be honored at a banquet Sept. 28. Banquet and ticket information will be announced later.

The inductees also will be recognized Sept. 27 at Warrior Stadium when Penn-Trafford hosts Plum.

Heritage final

The District 6 Heritage Conference announced its baseball title game will be 7 p.m. May 13 at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Homer City.

The conference’s annual “Teddy Bear Fund Drive” fund-raising baseball-softball game will be April 20 at the same site.

Petrof adds offer

Ligonier Valley football lineman Michael Petrof added an offer from Robert Morris to his growing list of interested colleges. Other offers for the 6-foot-2, 275-pound junior include Cornell, LaFayette, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Fordham, Harvard, and Dartmouth.

Jeannette coach resigns

Jeannette is seeking a new boys soccer coach after the resignation of Rob Rundle after two seasons.

Jeannette has just three wins the past three seasons and has battled low roster numbers at times.
