Westmoreland high school notebook: WPIAL team golf tournaments tee off

WPIAL golf this week shifts to team competition for the postseason.
The boys playoff teams must make it through a semifinal to play for a title. The Class 3A semifinals will be 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Central Catholic, Connellsville, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Latrobe, Indiana, North Allegheny and Plum will play at Champions Lakes Golf Course in Bolivar.
Belle Vernon, Canon-McMillan, Peters Township, Seneca Valley, Shaler, South Fayette and West Allegheny will compete at Indian Run Golf Course in Avella.
Belle Vernon won the WPIAL 2A title last season.
In 2A, semifinals will be Tuesday at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Connellsville and The Links at Spring Church near Apollo.
Avonworth, Bishop Canevin, Ellwood City, Greensburg Central Catholic, Mt. Pleasant, Quaker Valley, Riverview, Shady Side Academy, South Side and Waynesburg will play at 9 a.m. at Pleasant Valley.
At Spring Church, Beaver, Brentwood, Deer Lakes, Elizabeth Forward, Freeport, Keystone Oaks, McGuffey, Neshannock and North Catholic will tee it up at 8:30 a.m.
The top three finishers at each site advance to the finals Oct. 10 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver.
The 3A girls championship field will have Armstrong, Elizabeth Forward, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Moon, North Allegheny, Peters Township, Pine-Richland and Upper St. Clair.
Those teams will compete at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver.
The Greensburg Central Catholic girls are chasing a 10th straight WPIAL title.
The Centurions will join Mt. Pleasant, North Catholic and Shady Side Academy in the 2A finals at Cedarbrook on the same day as 3A.
PIAA golf
The PIAA boys and girls individual golf championships will be Oct. 21-22 at Penn State.
Local 3A boys qualifiers are junior Colin Holt and junior Jordan Mocello of Belle Vernon.
Senior Braden Riley of Greensburg Central Catholic is the only local Class 2A boys qualifier.
For the girls, 2A qualifiers are junior Alayna Stawovy and Kennedy Kelly of Greensburg Central Catholic.
Tennis playoffs
The WPIAL team tennis playoffs begin Monday with first-round matches at 3 p.m.
Two local teams, Franklin Regional and Mt. Pleasant, have home matches.
In Class 3A, No. 9 seed Penn-Trafford will visit No. 8 Pine-Richland, No. 10 Latrobe travels to play at No. 7 North Allegheny, No. 15 Norwin visits No. 2 Shady Side Academy and No. 6 Franklin Regional hosts No. 11 Peters Township.
Local Class 2A matchups are No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic at No. 5 Oakland Catholic, No. 11 Derry at No. 6 Beaver and No. 7 Mt. Pleasant vs. No. 10 Indiana.
The 3A quarterfinals are Wednesday, and 2A plays again Thursday.
The semifinals in both classes are next Monday, and the finals are Oct. 16 at Washington & Jefferson.
Berk to Millersville
Latrobe basketball player Carley Berk, a 5-foot-7 senior combo guard, will continue her playing career at the NCAA Division II level.
Berk announced she made a verbal commitment to Millersville, which is about 195 miles east of Latrobe.
Millersville plays in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division.
Berk is a Western PA Bruins player in AAU. Last season, she averaged 10.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals in 30 minutes a game.
Recruiting
Norwin baseball player Justin McNelly committed to Division III Saint Vincent.
McNelly, a senior, is a third baseman and pitcher.
