Westmoreland high school notebook: Pevarnik, Jackson headline WCCA boys golf tournament

The Westmoreland County Coaches Association will host its boys golf championships Thursday at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.

The event will showcase two of the top players in the county and WPIAL.

Latrobe senior Brady Pevarnik, a Penn State recruit, returns to defend his title. He finished third as a sophomore and second as a freshman. He won last year with a 2-under-par at Latrobe Elks.

Franklin Regional standout Palmer Jackson, who recently committed to Notre Dame, finished second last year, one shot back, after winning in 2016.

Franklin Regional is the returning Division I team champion. Kiski School won the Division II title.

Others to watch include Greensburg Central Catholic’s Zach Boote, Jeff Mankins and Jack Oberdorf of Greensburg Salem, Penn-Trafford’s Cade Patterson and Norwin’s Sal Cerilli.

The top 10 individuals earn medals.

Move over, coach

A couple of area soccer players passed their coaches in the record books. Ligonier Valley senior Mia Lynn had a hat trick Tuesday to give her 51 goals and allowed her to surpass Rams assistant coach Lauren Cassler for fifth on the program’s all-time list for goals scored.

Belle Vernon senior star Markello Apodiakos, meanwhile, moved into second place on the program’s scoring list. He has 159 points. He has 67 goals and 25 assists and is 46 points away from 1989 graduate Mike Posey’s all-time mark. Last season, Apodiakos netted 37 goals to break Leopards coach Rob Miele’s single-season mark set more than 10 years ago.

Apodiakos had 81 points last season for a school record.

Barnes adds offer

Jeannette senior football player Marcus Barnes was offered a scholarship Friday from St. Francis (Pa.). Barnes, a 6-foot-4 wide receiver and defensive back, also has offers from Army, Navy, Air Force, Holy Cross, Robert Morris and others.

Pitt and Norwin

Pitt has opened a pipeline to Norwin in at least a couple of sports.

Two girls soccer players have committed to the Panthers: junior Eva Frankovic and sophomore Katelyn Kauffman. And offers have been made by Pitt to football players Jayvon Thrift, a senior safety, and junior quarterback Jack Salopek.

Freshman Anthony Harding plays for the Pitt men’s soccer team.

Other sports also have produced recruits in recent years: Alayna Gribble is a junior on the Pitt women’s basketball team.

Connor Perry is a Norwin grad who is a junior on the Pitt baseball team.

Redshirt sophomore Peyton Deri made the Panthers football team as a walk-on.

And it wasn’t long ago Mike Shanahan played football at Pitt after starring for the Knights.
