College basketball recruiting is expected to take off in the coming months for Latrobe senior-to-be Reed Fenton.

It began last week as the 6-foot-4 guard with the fluid jumper and cool court presence added his second Division I offer, from Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.

Navy offered Fenton in early May. His father, Neal, played at Navy before transferring to Bucknell.

Drake plays in the Missouri Valley Conference. The last WPIAL star to play there was Highlands' Micah Mason in 2012. Mason, the WPIAL's all-time leader in 3-pointers and one of the most accurate long-range shooters in NCAA history, transferred to Duquesne after one season.

Reed Fenton is planning an unofficial visit to Iowa later this month. He already took an unofficial visit to LSU.

Fenton averaged 22 points, 4.5 assists and three steals last season for Latrobe.

WPIAL finals back to Oakmont

The WPIAL Class AAA boys golf championship is coming back to storied Oakmont Country Club.

Top players will take on the fast greens and demanding bunkers for the district title Oct. 2, WPIAL Golf Steering Committee chairman Jim Croushore said.

The WPIAL tournament was played at Oakmont in 2016, just three months after the course hosted its record ninth U.S. Open.

“The WPIAL Golf Committee is appreciative of the invitation from the membership of Oakmont Country Club, allowing us the opportunity to hold our championship at one of the greatest golf courses in the world,” Croushore said.

In 2016, with the famed layout somewhat soft, Fox Chapel sophomore Gregor Meyer won the WPIAL title with a 1-under-par 70.

Oakmont had not previously hosted the high school finals since the late 1980s.

Once again, Oakmont will not permit practice rounds for non-members.

The WPIAL boys semifinals will be a week before the finals at Hannastown Golf Club and Youghiogheny Country Club.

The boys Class AA championship will be played at Allegheny Country Club. The girls Class AAA and AA finals will be at Diamond Run Golf Club.

Callas steps down

Franklin Regional is looking for a new girls basketball coach after the resignation of Courtney Callas.

Callas said she stepped down because of time constraints that put pressure on her family and work life.

The Freeport graduate had a record of 28-38 with the Panthers over three seasons and took the team to the WPIAL playoffs once.

Franklin Regional finished 8-13 last season and missed the postseason.

Callas was an assistant at Seton Hill before taking over the reins on Murrysville.

Norwin Hall of Fame

The latest class of the Norwin Athletic Hall of Fame includes Ben Bailey (basketball), Brad Bouldin (volleyball), Mike Ferragonio (volleyball), Nicky Garrity (soccer), Rachel Kalberer (volleyball, track), Carol Muentzer-Henderson (track), Damon Pietronigro (swimming), Dan Priatko (football, contributor), Tom Savage (basketball) and Tim Tray (track).

Former Knights teams to be honored are the 1977 boys basketball and cross country teams; and 1987 and '88 girls volleyball.

The class will be recognized at a banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 20, at Stratigos Banquet Centre. Tickets are $35 and can be obtained by calling 724-861-3006 or emailing Amy Kerr at akerr@norwinsd.org.

Odds and ends

Penn-Trafford junior diver Paige Kalik, the WPIAL Class AAA champion last season, was named to the NISCA/Speedo Girls One-Meter Diving All-America team. Kalik holds multiple school records. … Penn-Trafford's Max Pici will play baseball at Mt. Aloysius in Cresson.

He said it

“Fun fact: Oregon has always been my dream school since I was about 9, so it would be awesome to get one from them.”

— Latrobe lineman Trent Holler on his “dream” scholarship offer.
