Westmoreland high school notebook: Hempfield’s Remaley out for season

Hempfield two-sport athlete Blake Remaley will miss the remainder of the basketball season after having surgery on his left shoulder.

A 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, Remaley said the procedure was to “clean things up” after he injured his labrum last football season.

He is the Spartans quarterback. The surgery was to his nonthrowing shoulder, and he said it will not be a detriment.

“I will be 100 percent for football,” Remaley said. “I will be ready for football in the spring and for college camps.”

Remaley, a starter in basketball, threw for 1,252 yards last football season. He completed 117 of 200 passes with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Big section hoops

There are a number of key basketball section matchups to watch in the area this week.

On Monday, the Latrobe girls host Penn-Trafford in Section 3-5A, and Elizabeth Forward’s girls visit Belle Vernon in Section 3-4A and Clairton heads to Greensburg Central Catholic in a duel for first place in girls Section 3A.

On the boys side Tuesday, Latrobe visits Hempfield, and Norwin goes to Penn-Trafford in Section 3-6A. Derry visits Highlands in Section 1-4A, and Jeannette travels to Serra Catholic in a Section 2-2A first-place clash.

Gateway at Franklin Regional is a key girls Section 2-5A matchup Thursday.

The Greensburg Central Catholic boys, meanwhile, have two important Section 3-A homes games with Clairton in town Tuesday and St. Joseph to follow Friday.

Brose offered

A football recruit to watch in the coming months is Hempfield junior lineman Fintan Brose. A 6-4, 280-pound two-way tackle, Brose pulled in his first Division I scholarship offer this weekend, from Bowling Green.

Stone leaves prep school

Former Southmoreland basketball standout Brandon Stone no longer is attending Christ School in Arden, N.C. The 6-11 Stone said he graduated early and transferred to Rocktop Academy in King of Prussia, where he will train before beginning his college career at La Salle.

“I will be working out with guys who have trained pros like Kobe (Bryant) and Kyle Kuzma,” Stone said. “I’m going to be working with a really good strength coach to help put on weight and get stronger. It’s going to help me get my body ready to play in college as well as improve my game in all areas.”

Stone, who grew 10 inches between seventh and 11th grade, averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds last season at Christ School, helping the team reach the state semifinals.

He has more than 1,500 career points, 1,199 of them at Southmoreland.

Klimchock update

Junior Asa Klimchock has been one of the top players this season for the Kiski School boys basketball team. Klimchock, a transfer from Greensburg Central Catholic, is averaging around 15 points and a half-dozen assists a game out of the backcourt and is generating college interest.

Local fans can see Klimchock on Feb. 5, when Kiski School plays at Latrobe.

Scoreboard update

Latrobe plans to install this week an addition to its scoreboard in the gymnasium. Athletic director Mark Mears said a 2-by-9-foot LED video display will hang below the scoreboard and will be able display to moving pictures and graphics.

The attachment will be similar to what Franklin Regional and Fox Chapel use in their gyms.

“This will help add some excitement to games,” Mears said. “We already have the new floor. It will be nice for businesses who want to advertise year-round.”

The new addition cost around $12,000, and it was paid for by sponsors.

Mt. Pleasant to name coach

Mt. Pleasant is expected to vote on a new softball coach Monday night. The program has been without a coach since the resignation of Lauren Armanious in October. Armanious led the Vikings to WPIAL (2016) and PIAA (2017) championships and had a record of 66-30 in five seasons.

Schedule change

The Penn-Trafford and Hempfield girls no longer are section opponents, with the latter moving down to Class 5A. But that didn’t stop the schools from scheduling a nonsection game.

They were supposed to play last weekend but will play Jan. 22 as part of a girls-boys doubleheader at Penn-Trafford.

The girls will tip at 6 p.m., with the Connellsville and Penn-Trafford boys to follow at 7:30.

Hempfield also is scheduled to play at Latrobe in another nonsection game Feb. 9.
