Five Westmoreland County girls volleyball teams graced the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Week 5 Coaches Poll.
Latrobe checked in at No. 7 in the Class AAAA top 10, with Hempfield nipping at its heels at No. 8.
Kiski Area is No. 10 in Class AAA, and Derry, which slid into the No. 5 spot in the Tribune-Review rankings, is No. 8 in Class AA.
Greensburg Central Catholic is No. 4 in Class A.
The WPVCA named Hempfield junior middle hitter Mekayla Dedo as one of its Class AAAA players of the week.
Serving up a good cause
Hempfield will host a Dig Pig charity event Wednesday night at the Spartan Fieldhouse. The Spartans take on Penn Hills at 7:15 p.m.
A Chinese auction, games, cookie sale and donations will help raise money for Hempfield resident Carolyn Vallano-Carr, who is battling breast cancer.
Donations can me made by calling Tiana, 412-610-1416.
Helm lands offer
Greensburg Central Catholic senior Geoff Helm will be one of the top returning basketball players in Westmoreland County this winter. He could end up playing his college career here, too. Seton Hill became Helm’s first scholarship offer. The 6-foot-4 swing guard led the Centurions in scoring last year at about 15 points per game.
Big game hunting
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will play at Jeannette Friday night in a rare nonconference football matchup that has built some buzz.
Not only are the 6-0 teams ranked in the Tribune-Review top 5 in Class A but also are among the best in the state rankings. Jeannette is No. 2, and OLSH is No. 4.
More Zambrunos
A family tradition will continue Wednesday at the WPIAL Class AA girls golf championship at Diamond Run Golf Club in Ohio Township.
There has been a Zambruno in the championship field every year since 2013. In 2015 and ‘16 there were two Zambruno siblings. This year, there will be three: senior Abby and freshman twins, Meghan and Ella.
There are only 12 players in the Class AA field, so that means it will be 25 percent Zambrunos.
Olivia Zambruno won WPIAL titles as a sophomore and junior before moving on to Penn State.
Abby will make her fourth straight appearance after finishing sixth twice and fourth last year.
