Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:
MONDAY
Boys volleyball: The WPIAL steering committee will announce playoff pairings. The postseason could begin as early as Tuesday.
Girls lacrosse: The WPIAL Class AAA playoffs begin around the district. Chartiers Valley visits Franklin Regional at 7 p.m.
Boys lacrosse: WPIAL playoff teams in Class AA will begin bracket play. Latrobe plays at Bethel Park at 7.
Baseball: After clinching the South Division, Ligonier Valley will go for its first Heritage Conference title since 2012 as the Rams face North champ West Shamokin (12-0) at 7 p.m. at First Commonwealth Field at Homer-Center Booster Complex.
TUESDAY
Softball: The WPIAL playoffs are set to begin, and seven local teams will be in action.
In Class 5A, Latrobe takes on Hampton in the first round at 6 p.m. at Gateway. Franklin Regional plays Montour at 6 p.m. at Hampton.
In Class 3A, Southmoreland faces Deer Lakes at 5 at Shaler, and it’s Derry vs. Beaver at 5 p.m. at Fox Chapel.
And in Class A, three area games are Greensburg Central Catholic-Bishop Canevin (3 at Fox Chapel), Sewickley Academy-Monessen (4 p.m. at Peters Township) and Jeannette vs. Mapletown (6 p.m. at Peters Township).
Girls lacrosse: First-round playoff matches in WPIAL Class AA will be contested. Norwin travels to Pine-Richland at 7 p.m.
Boys lacrosse: Class AAA first-round matches will be played around the WPIAL. Franklin Regional hosts South Fayette at 7.
WEDNESDAY
Baseball: Yough had one of its better regular seasons, and the Cougars will look to continue the momentum in the Class 4A playoffs as they open against Central Valley at 4 p.m. at Shaler.
Belle Vernon faces Beaver at 2 p.m. at Fox Chapel, and Mt. Pleasant goes against Ringgold at 4 p.m. at Seton Hill.
In Class A, Greensburg Central Catholic and Rochester will meet at 2 p.m. at Shaler, and Monessen plays St. Joseph at 2 p.m. at Seton Hill.
Softball: Section 1 co-champion Norwin will open the Class 6A first round against Bethel Park at 4 p.m. at Gateway, the first game of a local doubleheader.
Hempfield will open another title defense as it takes on Baldwin in the second game at 6 p.m.
In Class 4A, Yough opens against Central Valley at 6 p.m. at Peters Township, and Greensburg Salem plays Ambridge at 6 p.m. at Hampton.
Ligonier Valley will take in Marion Center in the District 6 Heritage Conference championship game at 7 p.m. at Ligonier Valley.
THURSDAY
Track & field: A new venue will host the WPIAL individual championships as the district’s top runners, jumpers and throwers compete for titles at Slippery Rock. The top 24 qualifiers in Class AAA and top 16 in Class AA in each event advanced to the WPIAL competition.
Baseball: Hempfield would face Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs, but the Spartans need to get past Upper St. Clair first. The teams play at 4 p.m. at West Mifflin. Norwin faces Mt. Lebanon at 2 p.m. at West Mifflin.
Jeannette, meanwhile, opens the Class 2A playoffs against Carmichaels at 2 p.m. at Seton Hill.
