A weather forecast of snow, rain and cold temperatures forced meet officials to postpone Saturday's South Hills Classic track and field meet at Baldwin High School.
βIt's not worth holding the meet with the risk of getting someone hurt,β meet organizer Ed Helbig said. βA lot of the events would've been adversely affected. We're always looking out for the best interest of the athletes. I don't think Mother Nature likes spring sports.β
Helbig said he monitored the forecast through Friday morning and decided to put a hold on the meet after consulting with other coaches who were bringing teams to the event.
A total of 23 teams with more than 1,000 athletes were set to compete.
Helbig said a makeup date for the meet, possibly on a weekday later in the month or early next month, is being discussed.
The weather is expected to improve for several area meets next weekend. The Cal (Pa.) Track Carnival and the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational at Latrobe is set for Friday, while the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Invitational will be the next day at West Mifflin High School.
The 54th annual Butler Invitational will be April 20 at Butler High School.
