Trib HSSN Wrestler of the Week: Franklin Regional’s Colton Camacho

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK: Colton Camacho, Franklin Regional, sr.

The Panthers’ 126-pounder, a Pitt recruit, joined a pretty exclusive club Saturday when he beat Derry’s Tyler Cymmerman by a 13-3 major decision in the finals of the Westmoreland County Coaches Association tournament at Norwin. He became the 13th four-time champion in the tournament’s 66-year history and the first to accomplish the feat in four years.

Camacho swept his three matches, with one win by fall and two by major decision, to claim the title.

Other nominees:

Luca Augustine, Waynesburg, so.: All Augustine did to win the 152-pound weight class at the Tri-County Athletic Directors Association tournament last week was knock off the wrestlers seeded No. 1, 2 and 3 in his bracket. Augustine used a pair of takedowns to defeat Peters Township’s Donovan McMillon, 5-3, in the final.

Gerald Comedy, Washington, jr.: The Prexies’ heavyweight made some school history at the Tri-CADA tournament by winning his weight class and becoming Washington’s first-ever champion at the 14-year-old event. Comedy, who also won a title at the Steve DeAugustino Holiday Classic, beat top-seeded Quentin Franklin of South Fayette in the semifinals and beat Burgettstown’s Riley Kemper in the finals.

Darren Miller, Kiski Area, sr.: He faced Latrobe’s Gabe Willochell in the Westmoreland County 132-pound final, a rematch from last season, and once again Miller came out on top with a 7-2 decision. It gave Miller, a Bucknell recruit, three WCCA titles in his Kiski Area career.

Gerrit Nijenhuis, Canon-McMillan, jr.: The top seed at 182 pounds, Nijenhuis rolled to his third championship at the Tri-CADA tournament in three tries. A pair of first-period pins took Nijenhuis to the final, where he beat Peters Township’s Brandon Matthews by major decision.

Ian Oswalt, Burrell, so.: He pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the Westmoreland County championships, toppling Norwin’s Kurtis Phipps, his friend and club practice partner, in the 120-pound finals by a 2-1 decision. Oswalt, a Class AA state medalist as a freshman, avenged a 4-0 loss to Phipps, a returning PIAA Class AAA runner-up, from their matchup at the Powerade tournament in late December. After two pins to start the tournament, Oswalt toughed out a pair of one-point wins in the semifinals and finals.

Austin Walley, Ellwood City, jr.: He earned Outstanding Wrestling honors at the Ed Driscoll MAC Tournament after he won the 182-pound championship, beating two-time WPIAL champion Bryson Miller, 3-2, in the final. Walley had two pins, a major decision and a decision during the tournament.
