Trib HSSN softball team of the week – Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers

Coach: Tricia Alderson (21st season)

Record: 8-0 in Section 2-A, 10-1 overall

#Earned: Following a huge victory over Carmichaels the week before, Chartiers-Houston continued to stay alone in first place in Section 2-A with a perfect 3-0 record last week, all section victories. On Wednesday, the Bucs crushed host Avella 24-0 in three innings thanks to 10 first-inning and 12 second-innings runs. The following day, after falling behind in the top of the first inning, the Buccaneers scored eight runs in the first three innings to defeat visiting West Greene in six innings, 14-4. Then on Thursday, Chartiers-Houston registered its sixth win of the year by more than 10 runs by scoring three runs each in the first, second and fourth innings and blanking Mapletown in five innings, 10-0, for the Bucs’ eighth straight win.

Standout performers: In the whitewash of Avella, junior pitcher Meadow Ferri and freshman Taryne Drilak combined for a three-inning no-hitter. Ferri also tripled and drove in four runs, while freshman Sydney English also had four RBIs. Sophomore Seanna Riggle and freshman Zaylee Fonner each had two hits and drove in two runs. Against West Greene, the Bucs played long ball. Junior Ella Richey smacked a pair of home runs while Fonner and sophomore Lauren Rush also homered in the 10-run win over the Pioneers. Then Ferri threw a five-inning perfect game in the win against Mapletown. She finished with 12 strikeouts of the 15 batters she faced. Richey led the Bucs at the plate by going 4 for 4 with another home run, a triple and three RBIs.

Last year: No matter the year, Chartiers-Houston softball always seems to be in the mix for a section or district championship. Roster numbers were down a year ago with only 11 players for many games, but the Buccaneers still finished in second place in Section 2-A with a 10-2 section mark and an overall record of 15-7. The Bucs had a first-round bye and defeated section rival West Greene in the quarterfinals, but lost in the semis to eventual champion Union. Following a consolation round win over Frazier, Chartiers-Houston defeated Cambridge Spring in the first round of the PIAA playoffs, then lost in the state quarterfinals to Claysburg-Kimmel.

Remember when: Tricia Alderson is not only an outstanding coach, she was a Hall of Fame pitcher back in the day, leading Chartiers-Houston to the 1987 and 1988 WPIAL championships. In her days in the circle, then Tricia Fabian won 25 straight games and threw a record 13 no-hitters, 10 one-hitters and 12 two-hitters in her career. As a coach, she has led the Buccaneers to five district titles, including three consecutive WPIAL championships from 2005-2007, then the Bucs struck back-to-back District 7 gold in 2011-2012. The 2010 Buccaneers did not win a WPIAL crown, but they did go on to win a PIAA championship.
