Casey Marshalwitz

School: Hampton

Class: Senior

The Trib HSSN Baseball Player of the Week is Hampton senior Casey Marshalwitz, who was a combined 6 for 11 with five runs, two RBIs, a double and a walk in wins over Shaler and Moon and a loss to defending champion North Hills.

“Casey has done a great job of becoming more selective at the plate as the year has gone on, and that showed this past week,” first-year Hampton coach Kellen Wheeler said. He’s working the count and taking advantage of pitchers’ mistakes, allowing him to barrel the ball better.”

Marshalwitz, also a starting pitcher, threw five innings and got a no-decision Monday in a 5-3 victory over Shaler.

“As a pitcher, Casey is extremely polished,” Wheeler said. “He works ahead in the count and doesn’t make mistakes in the heart of the plate. When Casey isn’t pitching, you can find him in one of the corner outfield positions tracking down anything hit his way.”

In his first year at his alma mater, Wheeler said it has been great coaching Marshalwitz.

“Each time we give him the ball, we are confident he’s going to put us in a great position to win. At the plate, he certainly has a hot hand at the right time. Casey is a ‘yes-sir, no-sir’ kind of kid, and it’s been a pleasure to coach him this year.”

Hampton has clinched first place in the tough Section 2-5A and close section play Monday against Mars.

“We knew we had our work cut out for us when we saw the realignment of the section,” Wheeler said. “The hard work these kids put in day-in and day-out paid off with a section title. However, the ultimate goal is to win the WPIAL championship. With the talent these other schools possess, it’s not going to be easy.”
