One of the great scholastic wrestling events will conclude the 2017-18 season Sunday as the top area wrestlers and the best mat workers in the state and across the country will take part in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic at Pitt's Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
This is the 44th year of the event known as the Rose Bowl of Wrestling.
It all starts at 4 p.m. when the WPIAL All-Stars face the Iowa All-Stars. The WPIAL team is made up of these wrestlers:
Frankie Bonura — Moon
Louis Newell — Seneca Valley
Caleb Morris — Waynesburg
Noah Levett — Kiski Area
Tyler Griffiths — Southmoreland
Luke Kemerer — Hempfield
Corey Christie and Shaun Gates — Burrell
Jesse Quatse — Greensburg Salem
Tim Wallace — Albert Gallatin
Nate Ansell — Connellsville
Ian Edenfield — Laurel Highlands
Gerald Brown — West Mifflin
Classic main event
The feature event at 6 p.m. will be the United States All-Star team against the Pennsylvania All-Star team.
There are four WPIAL wrestlers who will battle for Team Pennsylvania — Logan Macri of Canon-McMillan at 120 pounds, Gavin Teasdale of Jefferson-Morgan at 126, Zach Hartman of Belle Vernon at 152 and Isaac Reed of Kiski Area at 285.
The U.S. team will be comprised of wrestlers from Ohio, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Utah and Oregon.
Heading south
While the snow and cold may be preventing most baseball and softball teams from starting the 2018 season on time this weekend, several WPIAL teams are headed south to start the season.
The forecast for Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Sunday is a chance of rain with temps in the 50's as six district teams are scheduled for Sunday morning and afternoon action at the Ripken Experience Complex. West Allegheny, Uniontown, South Fayette and Avonworth are slated for two games while Brownsville and South Allegheny have one each.
Further south, Elizabeth Forward and Yough softball are scheduled for games at the Disney tournament in Orlando, Fla. A forecast of sunshine and temps in the 80's will be the backdrop as the Warriors and Cougars take on teams from Illinois.
