Parshall Shines as Belle Vernon Beats Yough for 4-A Gold
June 1, 2017
Belle Vernon's Bailey Parshall is well-known for her pitching exploits. Why wouldn't she be' She led the WPIAL in strikeouts this season and has been quite adept as a pitcher since her freshman year, a year in which she committed to Penn State University.
But in the WPIAL Class 4A championship softball game, Parshall showed she is pretty skilled with a bat as well. The junior went 3-3 with three doubles and two RBIs in a 4-1 victory over Section 2 4-A rival Yough at California University's Lilley Field.
That doesn't mean Parshall didn't shine in the pitching circle. She turned in a sparkling performance with nine strikeouts (which brings her season total to 224) and allowed just four hits and two walks.

Friday HighLights for Week Five
October 1, 2016
As Friday night of Week Five of the 2016 campaign began, most pre-games and kickoffs had to deal with passing rain showers. But as the games went on, the skies cleared, the temps dropped and the stars started to shine. However in a day and age when most of the star are found in the sky, or at least doing damage through the air, it was a night of success for those who love to pound on the ground as eight running backs in the district surpassed 200 yards rushing, including one massive record setting performance.

CTK ’16: 3-A Interstate Conference Preview
August 24, 2016
You could say the road to the top of the Interstate has gone through Washington in recent years. Washington won the Class 2A Interstate Conference three of the past four years.
But a journey through the Interstate this year will not include a stop at Washington.
Under the new classification system, Washington is longer in the Interstate. The Little Prexies are a Class 2A team.
The departure of Washington isn’t the only change in the Interstate. Charleroi, Burgettstown and Brownsville also have dropped to Class 2A. Meanwhile, the Interstate adds Elizabeth Forward and Yough, which played in 3A last season. Also, South Park moves over from the old 2A Century Conference.
Here is a look at this year’s Interstate:

August 15, 2016
New Faces - New Places - New Hopes - New Dreams. Legendary McKeesport coach George Smith retired for a second time while record setting coach Tom Nola exited at Gateway. There are a lot of rookie head coaches getting their first crack, and some coaches who are just changing hats and addresses. Whatever the case, there are 17 coaching changes coming into this 2016 season. Here are the new football coaches that will be running the sidelines in the WPIAL this fall.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/08/2016

It’s been a while since there has been this much of a roar coming from Cougar Mountain at this time of the year.
The Yough Cougars basketball team is making a lot of noise this year. Yough is 9-3 overall and in first place in WPIAL Class AAA Section 3 with 4-0 record. Yough took over sole possession of first place with a 77-69 overtime victory against Indiana Tuesday. Indiana is the defending WPIAL champion.
Yough is one of the biggest turnaround stories in the WPIAL, under second-year coach Casey Copeman. Yough was 6-16 last year and won only 49 games in the previous eight seasons. The last time they finished above .500 was 2006-07 when the Cougars were 15-9.

There is a Wildcat strike in WPIAL boys basketball this season.
Big things are expected of the Latrobe Wildcats and coach Brad Wetzel’s crew has been impressive in the first week of the season. Latrobe is 3-0, including Tuesday’s victory against Pine-Richland, which was the No. 2-ranked Class AAAA team in the MSA Sports preseason Class AAAA rankings.
This could be one of Latrobe’s best teams in a while, at least the best since the 2009 team that went 19-4. Latrobe is the odds-on favorite to win Section 1. If Latrobe wins the section, it would be only their fourth crown in the past 30 years. The others were in 1987, 1990 and 2009.
