Penn State football coach James Franklin lost out on the top player in the WPIAL class of 2015 when Central Valley’s Jordan Whitehead signed with Pitt.
Other than Whitehead, Penn State had plenty of success in the WPIAL. At least more than the Nittany Lions have had in recent history.
Penn State signed four players from the WPIAL this season. That might not seem like a lot, but it is more than the past four classes combined. In fact, only twice in the past 10 years has Penn State landed four or more players from the WPIAL. In 2010, Penn State signed five WPIAL players and four in 2007. Two of the past four years, Penn State did not sign one WPIAL player.

Winchester Thurston Unseats Sewickley Academy in Boys A Shootout
November 1, 2014
Sewickley Academy have certainly been no strangers to the WPIAL Class A Boys Soccer Finals, having won the title in 2005 and 2007 and 2013. In stark contrast, Winchester Thurston was making their first ever appearance in the Finals, highlighted by tough 1-0 victories over Riverview and Vincentian in the quarters and semis respectively. The experience was not a factor as the Bears edged the Panthers 1-0 in an overtime shootout.
The 2 teams underwent a feeling-out process throughout the 1st half, though both teams had their share of chances. Solid goaltending and defense, in a trend that continue throughout the game, kept both teams off the board.

SSA & SA Academy Duos Win 2012 WPIAL Boys Doubles Tennis Titles
May 5, 2012
It's not often that an 8th seed wins any tournament, but it rarely happens on the tennis court where the top-seeds often prevail. The Shady Side Academy tandem of Alok Nimgaonkar and Chris Grubbs broke the mold Friday when they swept past Ben Short and Dylan McCullough of Fox Chapel to win the 2012 WPIAL Class AAA Boys Doubles Tennis titles. Alok's brother Vivek was on the district doubles winning team a year ago. However in Class AA, the top seed did prevail to win the championship as the duo of William Kleeman and Patrick Dellinger of Sewickley Academy won the Class AA Finals in straight sets over Tim Hoban and Alex Kietz of Winchester Thurston. Kleeman won the WPIAL Class AA boys doubles title a year ago with then Panthers teammate Daniel Martchek.
