WPIAL Week Nine Saturday’s Scholastic Starz

One team was playing for playoff positioning and a chance to finish as high as third place instead of sixth place while the other was home for one final game playing for pride and bragging rights against an arch-rival. That was the setup for the final Saturday of the 2012 WPIAL football regular season and the lightest day of the season with only two games on the docket. CTK 2012 – WPIAL A Big 7 Conference Preview

The Class A Big Seven Conference may have underwent the biggest changes of all the conferences in the WPIAL. Gone are the Cornell Raiders with that school dropping football. Entering in the conference are the OLSH Chargers, who challenged for the playoffs in only their second year of football, along with the Laurel Spartans, who went to the Class A Semifinals in 2009.
The conference underwent a huge change on the head coaching front as three of the eight schools will have new bosses entering the season.
A conference member has played for the WPIAL title the last four seasons, but all four times, has fallen to Clairton in the title game. Will the Big Seven winner put an end to the reign of the Bears, we shall see:

A busy Friday night of high school football action in Week Eight left only four WPIAL games to be played on the next to the last Saturday of the regular season. Two teams were looking to secure the top-seed in their conference while another was trying to secure a playoff berth. That left five teams to play the role of spoiler or to just play for pride.

However the busiest Saturday of the season to date with a total of eight WPIAL games produced more than a few stars of a gloomy, chilly, wet...and dare I say perfect day for football.

The final Saturday of September in the 2011 high school football season saw two Class AA and three Class A conference tilts. If you do the math, the light schedule gives us a perfect five games to select five top performances. Math makes me dizzy, much like these players Saturday made their opponents feel.
