2014 MSA Sports Diamond Studs Baseball All-Star Team
June 18, 2014
Blackhawk’s Brendan McKay and Norwin’s J.J. Matijevic were history makers. They did things this baseball season that hadn’t ever been done in the WPIAL before. McKay and Matijevic were so dominant and so terrific that the MSA Sports staff had trouble separating the two for Player of the Year honors. So, MSA decided to do a rare thing. They picked McKay and Matijevic as co-Player of the Year. McKay and Matijevic lead MSA’s Diamond Studs team, which is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL. The team is heavy with pitchers, but some of the pitchers also excelled in the field and as hitters. Here is a look at the MSA Sports Diamond Studs team as well as the co-Player of the Year. There are multi-sport athletes in the WPIAL who compete in more highly-visible sports than North Hills’ Noah Bostick. But as far as the number of sports and excelling in them, Bostick has few peers. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say Bostick is most one of the best all-around athletes in the WPIAL. He is a young man for all seasons – and then some. You don’t see many three-sport athletes these days at large schools. But Bostick is more than a three-sport athlete. He actually competes in four sports, and does well in all of them.

The son is shining all over area basketball this season. It is quite common to see a coach’s son do well in WPIAL basketball. But it just seems there are more than usual father-son combos doing well this year. Four sons whose father is the head coach are averaging between 17 and 22 points a game for teams that all have at least clinched a WPIAL playoff berth, or are in good shape to make it to the postseason. * Julian Batts, a junior guard at Jeannette, averages 22 a game for the Jayhawks. His father is Adrian Batts. Jeannette is tied for second place in Class AA Section 3. * Matty McConnell averages 19 a game for Chartiers Valley, which has clinched at least a tie for the Class AA Section 5 title. His father is Tim McConnell.

Chicks Picks – Week 11 – 2013
November 7, 2013
Welcome to Week 11. It is not unusual for Chick’s Picks to be flooded with requests for guest appearances around the WPIAL—a small part of the price of fame that has come along with her celebrity prognosticating career.  A rather extraordinary request came in last week, however—one that Chick’s Picks could simply not refuse. The City of Pittsburgh reached out late last week seeking her availability to serve as a parade Grand Marshal—a role that Chick’s Picks had always aspired to be.  Looking back at other famous Grand Marshals throughout history—Paula Deen, Mr. Rogers, Pele, and even Mickey Mouse himself—Chick’s Picks knew at that moment that she had made it.
