MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Two
September 10, 2016
It was wet...it was wild...and depending on what sideline you were on, it was a wonderful Friday night of high school football...and we are only in Week Two. A long winning streak stretching over parts of seven years came to a sudden halt...a long losing streak came within inches of ending...and depending on what part of Western Pennsylvania you were watching your favorite team, you either had to deal with a pregame sprinkle or a mid-game downpour. Oh yeah, there were these gems that provided the icing on a very delicious scholastic football cake. Phil Jurkovec - Pine-Richland

CTK ’16: 4-A Big Nine Conference Preview
August 21, 2016
While realignment created some radically different conferences for the upcoming football season, the 4-A Big Nine bears a tremendous resemblance to the former AAA Big 10 Conference. Eight of those teams made the transition to the Big Nine, while only Yough and Elizabeth Forward moved elsewhere. In their place, Greensburg Salem, formerly of the AAA Greater Allegheny Conference, has joined the section. Thus, many of the rivalries are already in place in the section, and teams and coaches will have a high level of familiarity. A notable difference for this season, though, is that only four teams will earn playoff bids, whereas the conference produced five teams a year ago.

Scholastic Notebook – 05/22/2016
May 22, 2016
Plum’s Alex Kirilloff has a good chance to be selected in the first round of the June 9 Major League Baseball draft. Teams love his bat and also like the way he plays the outfield. At Plum, they also love the way he pitches. Kirilloff has a bright future as an outfielder, but at the present, he is one dominating pitcher. He is certainly one of the best hurlers in the WPIAL. When Plum defeated Peters Township, 2-0, in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals Thursday, Kirilloff led the way with his hitting – and pitching. He had a double and triple at the plate. But he also pitched six innings , struck out 11 and gave up only one hit.

2016 Hometown Softball Recap – Belle Vernon Leopards
May 10, 2016
Bailey Parshall tossed a two-hit shutout striking out 12 and walking only two as the Lady Leopards raised their Section 3 AAA record to 8-3 and overall record to 14-5. Parshall also went 4-4 at the plate with a double and three singles to key the Leopards 11 hit attack.  Kourtney Gavatorta got Belle Vernon on the board with a bases loaded 2 run double in the bottom of the first inning to put BVA up 2-0 after 1 inning. It could have been worse, but West Mifflin pitcher Amber Cook was able to pitch her way out of a one-out bases loaded jam by getting back to back pop-ups to end the inning with the Leopards stranding 3 runners.

Hometown Softball Recap – West Mifflin Titans – 04/14/2016
April 14, 2016
In the ultra-competitive Class AAA Section 3, outcomes are often decided by just a handful of key plays. On Thursday, a throwing error by West Mifflin proved to be the difference-maker, as Thomas Jefferson scored a 3-2 victory against the host Titans. The resurgent Jaguars, who scored wins over both Belle Vernon and Trinity this season after failing to qualify for the postseason last year, gained the upper hand early, as they plated a run in the first inning on a double steal.

Hometown Softball Recap – Elizabeth Forward Warriors – 04/06/2016
April 6, 2016
Sarah Turek pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout and went 3-for-3 with an RBI at the plate, leading Elizabeth Forward (4-1, 1-0) to a 5-0 win over rival West Mifflin (4-3, 0-2) on Wednesday in Forward Township. Turek, a senior and Muskingum University recruit, struck out four Titans batters and retired the final 13 batters she faced. Hitting ninth in the order, Turkek formed a nice 1-2 punch with freshman leadoff hitter Taylor Ludwick, who crushed a third inning home run and drove in another run with a double in the sixth inning.

Hometown Softball Recap – West Mifflin Titans – 04/01/2016
April 1, 2016
West Mifflin banged out 11 hits and had 19 base runners but struggled to get hits when they needed them the most, in dropping their first AAA Section 3 game of the season to the much improved Ringgold Rams Thursday afternoon at West Mifflin High School. Titans senior, Amber Cook, led the way with three hits, including an RBI double that knocked home Tiana Sekowski in the 3rd inning which, at the time, cut the Ram lead to 3-2. Sekowski reached base in four of her five plate appearances and had two stolen bases. But, Ringgold would score two more runs in the top of the 4th inning to extend the lead to 5-2. The Titans would threaten but not score in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings as they stranded two base runners in each inning.

Chicks Picks – Week 10 – 2015
November 5, 2015
Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season. As a veteran prognosticator, Chick’s Picks has received countless commendations over the years.  None of these honors, however, were quite as prestigious as the one earned this week. Chick’s Picks received an anonymous phone call early Sunday morning.  The caller, a woman, told Chick’s Picks that her presence was requested by The Committee on Monday afternoon.  Confused, Chick’s Picks inquired further as to which committee the woman was referring.  The woman simply said, “Report to the Double Tree Hotel in Greentree at noon tomorrow.  Bring your crystal ball.  All of your questions will be answered there.”

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – First Round
The Highway to Heinz begins this week, a very exciting time in southwestern Pennsylvania and at the MSA Sports Network. We have been stretched to the max by the fall championship season but with one final tug we found a way to carry every single WPIAL football playoff game yet again. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Most years I fall in love with 8 v 9 games, but this year was different for me. Looking through the brackets I found myself most fascinated by three of the 7 v 10 games. Hey at this point they’re all big games, so easy pickins as we go post season Big Game Hunting. Class AAAA:
