CTK 2013 – Pittsburgh City League Preview

For the second year in a row, Pittsburgh City League football will be a nice little six pack.With the closure of Oliver, Peabody, Langley and Schenley in recent years, the City League is down six teams. Last year was the first season with only six teams and Perry defeated University Prep for the title.One of the problems with having only six teams is that teams have experienced some trouble getting a nine-game schedule. Last year was the first year that the WPIAL scheduled all nine games for WPIAL teams. In the past, the WPIAL did not schedule season openers. It was up to WPIAL schools to play whoever they wanted. Thus, some WPIAL teams played a City League team in the opener.

North Allegheny, Clairton, Erie Prep & Wyomissing Win 2012 PIAA Football Titles

The West ended up going 3-1 against the East in the PIAA football championships in 2012. The Clairton Bears finished off a third straight 16-0 season with a fourth consecutive PIAA Class A state football championship. The win extends the longest high school football winning streak in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to 63 in a row. Erie Cathedral Prep won the Class AAA state title while North Allegheny made it two Class AAAA state crowns in the last three years. Only Aliquippa came up three points short of a clean sweep for the WPIAL and Western Pa. CTK 2012 – Pittsburgh City League Preview

To make the playoffs in the Pittsburgh City League, teams must finish in the top four spots. With the size of the City League now, only two teams will NOT make the playoffs. With school closures in the past few years, this is the smallest the City League has ever been. Langley and Oliver closed after the 2011-12 school year. That leaves the City League with only six teams. The league joins the WPIAL in some sports this year, but City League officials wanted to remain intact for football. University Prep won the City League title in its first year of existence last year. Here is a look at the City League:

The high school football focus in Southwestern Pennsylvania was on Heinz Field in Pittsburgh Saturday as District 7 held their four championship games in the big house on the North Shore. But the WPIAL football finals were the end of the district playoffs AND the start of the state playoffs.
