CTK 2012 – WPIAL AAA Greater Allegheny Conference Preview

It’s not a complete facelift for the Greater Allegheny Conference, but the conference sure looks a lot different this season.
With the WPIAL’s realignment, the Greater Allegheny got bigger overall and added a little Keystone Conference flavor. What happened to the Greater Allegheny Conference is basically a two-fold thing:
1. Kittanning and Valley dropped out of the conference and moved down to Class AA.
2. Derry, Franklin Regional, Greensburg Salem and Hollidaysburg all were moved out of the Keystone and into the Greater Allegheny. The much-maligned Keystone Conference is no more.
As for the Greater Allegheny race, it seems just about everybody is picking Franklin Regional as the team to beat.

Quigley Edges Indiana in Double OT Thriller to Win PIHL Open Cup

The Open Cup classification saved their best for last. Nick Santiago scored 34 seconds into the second overtime, propelling Quigley to a 5-4 win over Indiana in the Open Cup Championship at Island Sports Center on Thursday night. The Spartans, who were the #1 seeded team in the Nailers Cup, overcame a two-goal deficit behind 4 goals by Troy Emig, winning their second Open Cup title in four years in a game that was delayed over 30 minutes because an official had transportation issues and could not make it to the arena.A busy first period for the two-man officiating crew saw five goals and six penalties. Quigley Wins PIHL Open Class Championship

High school hockey fans discovered Thursday night what happens when two PIHL champions collide. 45 minutes of regulation and ten more minutes of an overtime could not decide a winner. Finally in the second OT, Nailers Cup champion Quigley scored to claim the 2012 Open Cup Title with a thrilling victory over Chiefs Cup champion Indiana. PIHL Chiefs Cup and Nailers Cup Hockey Championship Recaps

2012 PIHL Open Class High School Hockey Playoffs

While PIHL Class AAA, Class AA and Class A teams are in the final two weeks of the long regular season, the Open Class teams have already dropped the puck on their postseason tournaments. The Nailers Cup is down to the Final Three while the championship game is set in the battle for the Chiefs Cup after the top two seeds were eliminated in the Semifinals.
