2014 WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championship Results
The first district championships of the 2014-2015 school year were decided Thursday with a pair of first time title winner crowned at the Shady Side Academy tennis courts Thursday afternoon. The battle of sisters never really materialized in the Class AA finals as junior Alyvia Kluska and sophomore Michaela Kluska played four games, then shook hands and announced that Alyvia would win the title via default. Last year, the two sisters were scheduled to meet in the consolation match and older sister Alyvia forfeited so younger sister Michaela could qualify for the states. Both sisters qualify for the PIAA singles playoffs next month. In Class AAA, top-seed junior Ananya Dua won on her home court by beating Charlotte Madson in straight sets to win the championship.

They haven’t exactly beaten world-class competition, but Norwin is still 2-0. After tonight, the Knights could be in a spot where they haven’t been in 15 years.
Norwin plays at Seneca Valley in a non-conference game. While Seneca Valley (0-2) is trying to find itself, Norwin is trying to go 3-0 for the first time in 15 years.
The last time Norwin was 3-0 was 1999, one of the greatest seasons in Norwin history. The Knights finished 8-4 and made it to the WPIAL semifinals before losing to Cecil Howard and McKeesport.

CTK ’14: WPIAL A Eastern Conference Preview
August 24, 2014
In the new-look Eastern Conference, four teams return while there are five news kids on the block. But with the pedigree of most of the newcomers, you can see why they are considered the Fearsome Foursome.
Here is the resume for the five new entrants into the Eastern Conference. Ten WPIAL football championships in the last eight years, two perennial powers in Class AA moving down to Class A and a team that set a district and state record 66-game winning streak along with the team that eventually broke that historic run.
This could mean a tough 2014 campaign for Eastern traditionalists Leechburg, Riverview, Springdale and Wilkinsburg who finished a combined 8-28 a year ago and were all home listening to the postseason on MSA Sports.

The son is shining all over area basketball this season.
It is quite common to see a coach’s son do well in WPIAL basketball. But it just seems there are more than usual father-son combos doing well this year.
Four sons whose father is the head coach are averaging between 17 and 22 points a game for teams that all have at least clinched a WPIAL playoff berth, or are in good shape to make it to the postseason.
* Julian Batts, a junior guard at Jeannette, averages 22 a game for the Jayhawks. His father is Adrian Batts. Jeannette is tied for second place in Class AA Section 3.
* Matty McConnell averages 19 a game for Chartiers Valley, which has clinched at least a tie for the Class AA Section 5 title. His father is Tim McConnell.

WPIAL to GCC: Suspend Boys Basketball Coach or Else
January 28, 2014
The WPIAL has no authority over personnel at district schools, but they do have the power to keep a school out of their postseason tournament. On Tuesday, the WPIAL ruled that Greensburg Central Catholic High School would have to suspend boys basketball coach Greg Bisignani at least three games or else they would not be allowed to participate in the upcoming WPIAL boys basketball playoffs.
The ruling came following a hearing on Monday after Coach Bisignani was accused of making contact with a game official following the Centurions 66-63 loss to McKeesport on January 18th. Bisignani denied he made contact with the official.
The Greensburg Central Catholic boys basketball program has also been put on probation for the rest of the season.

All of a sudden, the menu of top boys basketball teams in WPIAL Class AAAA Section 4 has Big Macs on it.
The Canon-McMillan Big Macs have pushed their way into a tie for the Section 4 lead with Upper St. Clair. The two teams meet tonight in a big game.
Although Section 4 isn’t strong this year, nothing should take away from the Big Macs’ surge. They were 3-4 at one point this season and have since won seven of eight. Of the last five wins, Canon-McMillan has give up 46 points or less in four of those games.
Canon-McMillan has a legitimate shot at a section title. Section title and Canon-McMillan usually aren’t mentioned in the same sentence.
