At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School.
The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before.
Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday.
Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. Derry Township had a perfect record in the 1930s, but that was before the school merged with Derry Borough to form Derry Area.

North Allegheny & Greensburg CC Repeat as Girls Golf Champs
October 13, 2016
Between 1986 and 1993, North Allegheny won six WPIAL girls team golf championships including four straight between '86 and '89. A 22-year drought ended last year and it only took 12 months for the Tigers to add to their golden club collections with an 8th district title. NA edged Shady Side Academy by one stroke Thursday to win the 3-A crown. Meanwhile, Greensburg Central Catholic remained perfect in Class 2-A...two years of having a girls golf team and a second straight WPIAL championship after a three stroke victory over former champ Central Valley at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver.
Here are all of the results from the 2016 WPIAL Girls Team Golf Playoffs.

At Mapletown, Rush rushes. A lot.
Dylan Rush is a junior running back at Mapletown who has enjoyed a big season so far. He is the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL with 1,027 yards. The only running back who is ahead of him is Armstrong’s Zane Dudek, who has 1,201.
Rush stands only 5 feet 9 and weighs 180 pounds. You have to wonder how strong Rush’s back is, because he is carrying the Mapletown team on it.
Rush’s number of carries isn’t on the high side. It’s on the ridiculous side. In four games, Rush has carried the ball 147 times. That’s 36.8 times a game. The rest of Mapletown’s team has 31 carries. On top of that, Mapletown has thrown 22 passes – and Rush has attempted seven of them.

Chicks Picks for Week Two
September 8, 2016
Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks has been fortunate enough to make a lot of friends throughout her prognosticating career – some that are unforgettable, and others that she cares to forget. One of Chick’s Picks’ favorites happens to be a very dear Twitter pal, who happens to be the better half of a local coach. This Twitter pal in particular has stood by Chick’s Picks through good times and bad – weeks when the crystal ball was on fire, as well as weeks when early retirement was considered. Earlier this season, during Week Zero, Chick’s Picks’ pal even came through with her own prediction when the crystal ball was in the shop for maintenance.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Frannie Crouse
September 5, 2016
Very few high-school athletes are able to capture a WPIAL Championship. Even fewer are fortunate enough to win a PIAA Championship. Winning an NCAA National Championship, though, is incredibly rare. Frannie Crouse, a soccer standout former at Greensburg Central Catholic and currently at Penn State University, has accomplished all three feats. As a result, she is the first student-athlete profiled for the 2016-17 edition of the WPIAL Alum Q&A.
Crouse had a legendary career with the Centurions, as she set records and established herself as one of the best performers in recent memory. To that point, she held the all-time state record for goals when she graduated. She also was named an All-State performer as both a junior and a senior.

MSA Sports Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week One
September 4, 2016
The bright sunshine was shining down on Class 1-A in the WPIAL on a wonderful afternoon for high school football and conclusion of Week One. CTK ’16: 1-A Eastern Conference Preview
August 28, 2016
Most of the time, the Clairton Bears have a perfect view from the top of the Eastern Conference. Will anyone get in the way of that view this year?
Clairton has won the Eastern Conference championship outright nine of the past 10 years. Every time, the Bears finished with a perfect record. Over the past decade, the only time Clairton didn’t finish perfect in conference play was 2013, when the Bears tied for first with Monessen and Fort Cherry.
Just about everybody picks Clairton as the No. 1 team in WPIAL Class 1A this season. But Jeannette seems primed to give the Bears a challenge.

Big Inning Helps Serra Catholic Unseat GCC for WPIAL Class A Gold
June 1, 2016
The third time this season was the charm for the Serra Catholic Eagles (22-2). After dropping two decisions to the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions (15-4) earlier in the year, the Eagles responded in a big way with five runs in the fourth inning to claim a 6-3 victory in the WPIAL Class A baseball championship game at Consol Energy Park on Wednesday night.
