Scholastic Notebook – 10/16/2015
October 16, 2015
Aliquippa is the only school in the WPIAL to have four running backs rush for more than 4,000 yards in their careers.
There will likely be one for the thumb by the end of the season.
Aliquippa senior running back Kaezon Pugh went over 3,000 yards two weeks ago and now has 3,210. Barring injury, Pugh should get 4,000 this season. He has three regular-season games left and Aliquippa should play at least two playoff games. The Quips are undefeated and played in the WPIAL Class AA championship seven years in a row.
What’s impressive about Pugh is his yards-per-carry average. It’s almost 10 for his career. Pugh has 3,210 yards on 324 carries (9.9 average).

October 15, 2015
A pair of new girls team golf district champions were crowned Thursday at the Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver as North Allegheny won AAA gold while Greensburg Central Catholic claimed the AA title. The Tigers won WPIAL girls golf championships six times between 1986 and 1993, however they haven't won since, ending a 22-year drought. NA edged Peters Township by only two strokes. Meanwhile, the gap was 15 strokes for the AA champion Centurions, who won a WPIAL crown in the teams first year of existence. Led by WPIAL Girls Class AA individual champion Olivia Zambruno, GCC cruised past defending champion Sewickley Academy to make history. Here are all of the results from the 2015 WPIAL Girls Team Golf Championships.

Scholastic Notebook – 10/09/2015
October 9, 2015
Many Class A football players are often smaller in size than those in Class AAA or AAAA. But Avonworth’s Zach Chandler and Neshannock’s Frank Antuono are Class A quarterbacks who would be large for any team, regardless of class.
And Chandler and Antuono are doing some big, big things this season.
Chandler is 6 feet 4, 235 pounds, while Antuono is 6-2, 220 and bench presses 400 pounds. Now consider what these “big guys” are doing:
*Chandler, a senior, leads the WPIAL in passing yardage with 1,702 after five games. He has completed 83 of 134. This after missing most of the past two seasons with injuries. He has helped Avonworth to a 4-1 record.

Marissa Balish and Olivia Zambruno Win WPIAL Girls Golf
October 6, 2015
Olivia Zambruno of Greensburg Central Catholic repeated as WPIAL Class AA champ while Marissa Balish of Hampton captured gold in Class AAA Tuesday afternoon at the Rolling Hills Country Club in McMurray. Both won in convincing fashion with with Balish shooting at 1-over par 73 and winning by three strokes while Zambruno shot a 3-over par 75 to win by five strokes.
It was the first district crown for the senior Balish while the junior Zambruno won for a second straight year. Balish is a member of the Talbots boys golf team since the girls do not have a team at Hampton. Zambruno did the same thing last year for the Centurions, but this year, a girls team was added at Greensburg Central Catholic.

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights – Week Five 2015
October 3, 2015
A little precipitation in the area before the real wet stuff driven by Hurricane Joaquin Andujar (look it up kids)...no problem. Temperatures dipping into the low 50's with winds that made it feel more like the 40's...again, no problem. Defenses geared to...wait, I'll just stop there. In this wild and crazy season of video game like play on the field resulting in huge points here, there and everywhere, top performances around the WPIAL on a Friday night are no longer hard to find. They are now just difficult to whittle down. Doing our best Jed Clampett imitation (look it up kids), we have whittled down some of the top outputs to these ten.

Chicks Picks – Week 3
September 17, 2015
Welcome to Week 3 of the high school football season.
After a long night at MSA Sports World Headquarters last Friday, Chick’s Picks arrived home to find a neighborhood gathering outside her house. Questioning the purpose of this late-night assembly, Chick’s Picks quickly realized that the man of the house, Mr. Picks, was behind it.
“Chick’s Picks – I was introducing myself to some of our new neighbors, and in conversation, I made sure to ask them if they had heard of THE Chick’s Picks. When they said yes, I proceeded to tell them that you lived here. So, they wanted to see you for themselves,” Mr. Picks said.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Nate Stone
September 14, 2015
WPIAL Alum Q&A is a new weekly question and answer segment with a former high school standout who is now excelling at the college level. It will span the fall, winter and spring seasons, and will focus on both male and female athletes in a variety of sports.
For the inaugural installment, we take a closer look at Nate Stone. A Scottdale native, Stone enjoyed a stellar career with the Greensburg Central Catholic football team. A 2014 graduate, he continued his academic and athletic career at Duquesne University.
In his freshman year, Stone started at linebacker for the Dukes, and he compiled 100 tackles. As a result of his strong play, the 6-foot, 240 pound linebacker earned the Northeast Conference Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Chick Picks for Week One
September 3, 2015
Awww yeah! Welcome to Week 1 of the high school football season.
Chick’s Picks felt it only proper to kick off the season with a quote from the legendary Deuce Skurcenski, who passed away earlier this month. Well-known by most around the WPIAL for his stats, his scorekeeping, and of course, his infamous one-liners, Deuce was said to have attended more than 10,000 basketball games and 3,000 football games in his day.
Chick’s Picks reflected upon the first time she met Deuce. It was a cool, crisp night at Woodland Hills. Chick’s Picks was nervous to finally meet the legend face to face, but thought, surely he would know of her – the top prognosticator in the WPIAL. So, she built up the courage and introduced herself.

CTK 2015 – Class A Eastern Conference Preview
August 27, 2015
The landscape of the Eastern Conference changed drastically in 2014 as a result of realignment, as two strong AA teams, Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette, dropped down in classification. Those teams, combined with Clairton and Monessen, as well as historically successful Springdale, appeared to comprise perhaps the most top-loaded conference in the WPIAL.
When the season concluded, though, there was no competition for the conference champion. Last season will always be remembered for the sheer and utter dominance displayed by the Clairton Bears. The team posted some of the most lopsided victories in recent memory, and the Bears culminated their season with a WPIAL Championship.
