Scholastic Notebook – 09/21/2012

After seeing Clairton clobber Monessen, 52-7, on Thursday night, it makes you wonder if this is the same Clairton team that struggled to beat Chartiers-Houston, 22-20, on the opening night of the season?
It most certainly is not the same team – at least defensively.
Clairton was without 10 players the first three weeks of the season. The players missed time because of grades or attendance issues from last school year, and the players returned to the team for the Monessen game. Only two of the players who missed the first three weeks were starters. But still, the return of the group of players changed Clairton.

Chicks Picks – Week Four – 2012
September 20, 2012
Welcome to Week 4 of the high school football season. After hearing of the West Shamokin win over Riverview Friday night that ended a WPIAL record 45-game losing streak, Chick’s Picks knew this was cause for celebration. She contacted her people in Rural Valley, PA, offering to throw a party for the victorious Wolves in honor of their win. The plans were in place, so Chick’s Picks hopped in her car and headed north to kick off the festivities.

Big Game Hunting for Week Four 2012
September 19, 2012
Rolling through the 2012 season in a hurry as week four comes upon us here in southwestern Pennsylvania, leaves and the weather starting to change. Not much change though at the top of the MSA Sports top ten rankings. The defending champs in each classification all sit atop their thrones with unbeaten records as we approach the midway point. But 2012 is not just a case of the rich getting richer by any stretch. Avella is 3-0 for the first time since 1976 and West Shamokin snapped the longest losing streak in WPIAL history with their 25-6 win over Riverview last Friday. Some change can be good. All this change can make it tough on the “Big Game Hunting” guy, but hey, he’s a gamer.

Scholastic Notebook – 09/07/2012
September 7, 2012
Sophomores had big games. Players who were their team’s No. 1 running back for the first time did some good things. A receiver turned running back also had a big game. The first weekend of the high school football season was a virtual coming-out party for some. Players introduced themselves to WPIAL football – and they were loud introductions.
The leading rusher on the first weekend of the season was North Catholic’s P.J. Fulmore, a 10th-grader who had 265 yards.
The second-leading rusher was Fort Cherry’s Koltan Kobrys, who played receiver last year. He ran for 250 yards.
