Chicks Picks for Week Six

Welcome to Week 6 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks attended her favorite yearly golf outing last week.  Though the event is for charity, Chick’s Picks – a scratch golfer – often gets bored rather easily with the lackluster play of average golfers.  While driving to the 16th hole, a very brief rain shower passed through, but then rewarded the golfers with a rainbow.

Friday HighLights for Week Five

As Friday night of Week Five of the 2016 campaign began, most pre-games and kickoffs had to deal with passing rain showers. But as the games went on, the skies cleared, the temps dropped and the stars started to shine. However in a day and age when most of the star are found in the sky, or at least doing damage through the air, it was a night of success for those who love to pound on the ground as eight running backs in the district surpassed 200 yards rushing, including one massive record setting performance. Bishop Canevin Crusaders Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap

Behind an early run and tremendous serving, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic defeated Bishop Canevin 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 28-26) in a non-section tilt on Monday night at Bishop Canevin High School. The Trojanettes racked up 15 aces in the match, as five different players had at least three service winners.Sarah Parey set the tempo for CWNC with four first set aces and two of her team-high six kills in the match. Parey was responsible for the early separation between the two squads, as the Trojanettes started the match on a 10-0 run behind Parey's serves. That, combined with a young Crusaders squad making eleven unforced errors in the opening set, resulted in a 25-14 victory.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Ryan Lewis

In high school, Ryan Lewis starred in two different sports at two different schools. His somewhat unorthodox path, though, led him to Robert Morris University, where he's now a standout on the Colonials' defensive line. Lewis is this week's spotlight for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. As a sophomore and junior in high school, Lewis was a standout for North Catholic. As a 6-foot-5, 200-plus pound receiver, he was a matchup nightmare for opponents. Likewise, he wreaked havoc on the defensive side, where he had 18 sacks and 100 tackles in his junior campaign. The Trojans finished 7-4 that season, making it to the Class A quarterfinals.

Big Game Hunting for Week One 2016

Big Game Hunting gets bigger! Nothing wrong with that, right? 2016 and our weekly four-pack gets rounded out to an actual 6-pack. While I am not a fan yet of six classifications; I am willing to give it a try and I am a huge fan of six-packs. When someone shows up at your door and they have a six-pack, they are automatically your friend. Well in 2016 I will be showing up at your door with a six-pack every week, so that will make us friends. That’s a good thing and so is more football talk, and so is researching and writing about 150% of the games for the same amount of money right? Er…. CTK ’16: 2-A Midwestern Athletic Conference Preview

The Midwestern Athletic Conference has had a rich history. In the 60’s and 70’s it was New Castle, showing why the Red Hurricanes are among Pennsylvania’s most historic programs. The late 80’s brought the addition of Aliquippa, setting up historic meetings with Riverside. Since the mid 90’s, the conference hadn’t changed much as the Quips, along with Beaver Falls, New Brighton and Beaver have been at the top of the standings. With the move to 6 classes, some new teams take up residence in the MAC. Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, Neshannock, Riverside and South Side move up to AA, while Freedom, Laurel, Mohawk and New Brighton look to add to the history of the MAC.

2015-2016 MSA SPORTS MALE ATHLETE of the YEAR

There is a reason why Erick Taylor has that “K” at the end of his name. His father had a best friend who was shot and killed many years ago, and the friend spelled his first name “Erick.” So Garth Taylor decided to give his son the same name in memory of his friend. Almost two decades later, the name Erick Taylor meant something special around WPIAL sports. It defined supreme athlete. Taylor has been named the MSA Sports Athlete of the Year for boys sports in the WPIAL in the 2015-16 school year. The award is selected by the MSA Sports staff.

2015-2016 MSA SPORTS GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-NETTERS

The Girls All Netters all-star squad this season is certainly a sizeable one. While guards often dominate all-star teams, the first team of the All Netters has four players at least 5-11, including three who are 6-1 or taller and one who is 6-4. The team is picked by the MSA Sports staff from all WPIAL teams. Three of the first-team members won WPIAL championships. 2016 PIAA GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS Results

Over the last three years, WPIAL girls basketball teams have brought home two state titles in each of the seasons to close out the 2013, 2014 and 2015 campaigns. This year, only one district team qualified for the state finals in Hershey and the gold rush continued as WPIAL Class A runner-up Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic was the last Class A team left standing in the PIAA postseason increasing the run of WPIAL girls teams with at least one state crown to eight straight years. Here are ALL of the final scores from the Road to Hershey and the 2016 PIAA Girls Basketball Playoffs. Eight is Great as Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Wins Girls PIAA A Finals

Coaches always say rebounding is a key to winning basketball games. Never was it so evident on Saturday afternoon as Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic used a 50-28 edge on the glass to claim a 56-33 victory over Lourdes Regional in the PIAA Class A girls state final at the Giant Center in Hershey. The victory gives Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic their 8th PIAA crown and first in Class A. Sam Breen saved her best performance for last this year, as the 6-1 junior scored 27 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and dished out 9 assists to lead her team to the title.
