As WPIAL basketball heads into the new year, two of the best teams – record-wise – are the Southmoreland boys and the Jefferson-Morgan girls.
Say what?
Yes, it is unheard of the past few decades for the Southmoreland boys and Jefferson-Morgan girls to be doing so well in the same season. Winning isn’t associated much with the two teams. But get this: There is only one loss between them.
The Southmoreland boys are 10-1 and the Jefferson-Morgan girls are 10-0.

2014 MSA SPORTS ELITE ELEVEN
December 12, 2014
Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci and South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh are prolific passers whose senior seasons have been very much alike in terms of statistics and team success.
DiNucci and Brumbaugh are also alike in the MSA Sports staff eyes. They are both players of the year.
The MSA Sports staff found it impossible to separate the two in terms of accomplishments this season. So, the two have been selected co-Players of the Year.
DiNucci and Brumbaugh also lead the MSA Sports’ Elite 11. The all-star team is made up of the top 11 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position.
Here is a look at the players of the year and the Elite 11.
CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR - BRETT BRUMBAUGH, SOUTH FAYETTE
QB, 6-4, 195, SR.

It has been well-documented how Pine-Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci has turned out to be one of the most prolific passers in the history of the WPIAL.
But DiNucci also has benefitted from a terrific one-two receiving punch.
It looks like you could call seniors D’ondre Gastion and Mike Merhaut are a receiving duo for the ages. There are no records available for best receiving one-two punches, but you can bet you will be hard-pressed to find many duos from the same team who have been as productive as Gastion and Merhaut.
How many teams have had two receivers with 100 or more career catches? But that’s what Pine-Richland has in Gastion and Merhaut, a pair of seniors.

Chicks Picks – Week Twelve – 2014
November 13, 2014
Welcome to Week 12 of the high school football season. It has been a long journey down the Highway to Heinz this season. Approaching the last exit on the distinguished roadway, Chick’s Picks thought it would be an appropriate time for the entire MSA Sports crew to stop for a bite to eat.
Leading the way, Chick’s Picks chose her favorite downtown restaurant. As the crew gathered in the lobby, the host approached—and was astonished when he saw who was in the party.
“Why, Ms. Picks, it is an honor to host you and your friends in our establishment,” he said as he led the crew to their table. As the host distributed menus to each person, he noted, “Please take a close look at our weekly specials.”

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Twelve
November 12, 2014
The Final off ramp on the Highway to Heinz is here and the WPIAL Football playoff Steering Committee is celebrating one of their finest moments ever. Each classification features seeds 1,2,3 and 5 still standing as we get set for semi-final Friday. The semi-finals feature the top three passers in the WPIAL and the top two rushers for the year are still alive as well. All the games are fantastic and so we at Big Game Hunting must make "Sophie's Choice" in each classification. We do not have any problem with that. You can send your complaints to drebel@MSASports.net.

October 19, 2014
There were six WPIAL teams in action on the Eighth Saturday of the 2014 high school football season and only one of them will be enjoying a ride on the Highway to Heinz in two weeks. While it has been a season to shine for defending Class A champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, the days other two road warriors, Mohawk and Riverview also had reason to be beaming on an overcast, chilly day. Here are the standouts from Saturday.
Cayne Yakubic - Mohawk

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 10/10
October 11, 2014
While the high school football playoffs are Primetime, that would make the three-week Stretch Run that wraps up the regular season the...Twilight? Whatever you want to call it, there seems each game has more on the line, thus to get to the big stage, you have to come up big in the 'dress rehearsals'. Here are those players that nailed it in Week 7 in the hopes they can do the same come Week 10.
Ben DiNucci - Pine-Richland

Chicks Picks – Week Seven – 2014
October 9, 2014
Welcome to Week 7 of the high school football season. Part of being a successful high school football prognosticator is always knowing what your competition is up to. While studying season statistics of those very rivals, Chick’s Picks noticed a few thing that were rather bothersome. She decided to schedule a meeting with The Boss to air her frustrations.
“Boss, I want to start off by saying that I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me over the last 15 years. But, this week, I noticed that my biggest rivals are spreading their wings, so to speak,” Chick’s Picks said.
The Boss replied, without looking up from his classic hunt and peck typing technique, “Chick’s, what is it that you want now?”

WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Seven 2014
October 8, 2014
The final third of the regular season gets underway Friday night here on the MSA Sports Network. Several teams have already clinched playoff spots and the stretch-run will be a lot about positioning yourself for a good seed and a playoff push towards Heinz Field. This week in Big Game Hunting we get the rarest of the rare, as a pair of number ones will square off in Imperial. A tip of the cap to South Fayette quarterback Brett Brumbaugh from BGH and after spending a Friday night at Neil Brown Stadium a word on the Clairton Bears, and that word is …WOW!
