Scholastic Notebook – 02/07/2014

Mars High School was built in 1918. So you could say it took almost 100 years for Mars to win a basketball section title outright. Now, Mars is on the verge of winning two sections in two years. Mars plays at Knoch Friday night in a big WPIAL Class AAA Section 1 game. Mars leads the section with a 10-1 record and is guaranteed at least a share of the section championship. Knoch is 9-2 in section and Indiana 9-2. But a Mars victory will give the Planets the section title outright. The first time they won a section title outright was last year and the Planets also made it to the WPIAL semifinals for the first time in school history.

MSA Sports Big Game Hunting – Week Seven

What a neat year it has already been. The Pirates reached the playoffs and it appears so will the Avella Eagles and the West Shamokin Wolves! All three are tremendous stories this fall. The stretch run is here and all of those teams control their own destinies. That is all their fans have been hoping and praying for. Some teams don’t control their own fate. Some need help, and some need a lot of help. The time has come for scoreboard watching and more importantly listening to the MSA Sports Scoreboard show every Friday night with Don Rebel. In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs. It’s likely to happen.Avella takes a 4-0 record (5-0 overall) into Friday night’s game against Frazier. No matter what happens Friday night and in the final three games, Avella stands an excellent chance to make the playoffs. The last time the Eagles were in the playoffs was 1976.Avella’s playoff drought is the current longest in the WPIAL. The next-longest playoff drought belongs to Southmoreland, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1979.

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for Week Five

It was a clean sweep for the month of September weather wise as for the fourth straight Friday and the fifth overall, the weather was outstanding for high school football around Western Pennsylvania. CTK 2013 – WPIAL Single-A Black Hills Conference Preview

Any discussion of the race in the Class A Black Hills must start with Clairton. The Bears come into the season on a 63-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the country and the longest in the history of Pennsylvania. Clairton lost a number of key players to graduation. So do the Bears simply reload? Do they step a back? Is this finally the year the streak ends? Questions abound about the Bears. For sure, they are good enough to win a conference title again and maybe a sixth consecutive WPIAL and fifth consecutive PIAA. Maybe Brentwood or Monessen are ready to give a serious challenge to Clairton. Remember Char-Houston gave the Bears fits on the opening night last year.

PIAA Baseball Semifinals Recap from Tuesday

Monday saw WPIAL AA champion Beaver clinch a spot in the PIAA state finals. However the news was not as good on Tuesday for District 7 as North Allegheny in Quad-A, Keystone Oaks in Triple-A and California in Single-A all saw their state title dreams and their 2013 season comes to an end with heartbreaking losses. With the demise of the Pittsburgh City League in baseball, the PIAA added a third team from District 7 Class AAAA.
