2014 PIHL PENGUINS CUP PLAYOFFS RESULTS

The fourth time is a charm for Peters Township as they won the Class AAA Penguins Cup after three consecutive seasons of going home second. Meanwhile, the other two champions crowned at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh on Monday were the top-seeds in their classification. Quaker Valley captured a third straight PIHL Penguins Cup Class A crown with a dominant victory over Thomas Jefferson while Bishop Canevin edged Erie Cathedral Prep in a Class AA thriller for the Crusaders second crown in four years. Scholastic Notebook – 03/14/2014

Seton-LaSalle boys basketball coach Mark Walsh is known as “Knobby.” He has two brothers, Kevin and Danny, who also are known as “Knobby.” The boys’ father, Ed, also is known as “Knobby.” It is a crazy name game. But at Seton-LaSalle, just call Mark Walsh one thing. “Winner.” Walsh has made Seton-LaSalle basketball relevant again. Well, more than relevant. He has guided the Rebels to one of the best seasons in school history. Seton-LaSalle won a WPIAL title for only the second time since joining the league in the mid 1970s. Also, Seton-LaSalle has a 27-1 record. That is the most wins since the school joined the WPIAL.

WPIAL Semifinals Tuesday Spotlight Game: Seton-LaSalle 62 – Bishop Canevin 40

In a rematch of last year's WPIAL Class AA Championship game, the Seton-LaSalle Rebels got a bit of revenge against their rivals, knocking Bishop Canevin out of the 2014 tournament with a 62-40 victory at Chartiers Valley High School.

It has become a tradition like no other...at least during the holidays here at MSA Sports. It's time to look back at another high school sports year with the top stories from around the WPIAL in 2013. We continue our countdown with the five stories that ended up #15 through #11. #15 - Perfect Champions It was a rare Perfect Saturday at Heinz Field on November 23rd as all four WPIAL football champions crowned did so with no losses. Pittsburgh Central Catholic, West Allegheny, South Fayette and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic were all 13-0 as they were presented with the golden football on a snowy day on the North Shore, but both the Lions and Trojans were not satisfied with just a district title, they wanted to stake their claim to state gold as well.

2013 WPIAL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS RESULTS

The top seeds advanced all the way to the finals where two of the three were able to reach the high expectations the district steering committee set for them. The Tigers claimed girls volleyball gold for the fourth time, the Yellowjackets for the third time and the close but no cigar Crusaders captured their school first ever volleyball title. North Allegheny, Freeport & Bishop Canevin Win WPIAL Girls Volleyball Gold

All three top seeds made it to the WPIAL girls volleyball championship finals Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School while a pair of #2-seeds were joined by a #7-seed in the title match thrills. While Bishop Canevin needed five games to knock out the defending champion Greensburg Central Catholic in Class A, Freeport and North Allegheny needed only the minimum three games to add to their golden collection. MSA Sports Big Game Hunting – Week Two

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Week one of the 2013 WPIAL football season showed a shining example of that statement, with a pair of defending champions in North Allegheny and Clairton, convincingly hushing the whispers that they were set to be declining in the current season due to graduation losses. Week two is chock full of delicious match-ups as well. The long holiday weekend is over, time to clean the grill, drain the pool, and go Big Game Hunting.
