2016-2017 MSA Sports Male Athletes of the Year

Darius Wise and Austin Butler were both 'Cats in high school, Wise playing for the Beaver Bobcats and Butler for the Latrobe Wildcats.
But when it comes to athletes, Wise and Butler are top dogs.
Wise and Butler, who both graduated last month, have been selected the MSA Sports Co-Athletes of the Year. The MSA Sports staff selects the athlete of the year from all WPIAL schools.
In the days of high school athletes specializing in one sport, Wise and Butler were throwbacks. They were multi-sports athletes - in the same three sports. But it's not just competing in three sports that made them stand out, it's what they achieved in the three sports that made them two of a kind.

MSA Sports 2017 Girls All-Netters

There are more than 8,000 reasons to like the players on the first team of this year’s MSA All Netters girls all-star team.
That’s how many points the five players have scored in their careers.
The All Netters team is selected by the MSA Sports staff and takes into consideration all players in the WPIAL. This year’s first team consists of three seniors and two juniors, and the three seniors are all headed to Division I colleges. And all five were big scorers. One of the seniors is among the top 10 scorers in WPIAL history.
Here is a look at the first- and second-team selections on the All Netters team, as well as the Player of the Year.

Beaver Sophomore Diver Wins WPIAL Girls 2-A Gold

At Moon High School in WPIAL Girls AA diving a new champion was crowned. With the PIAA realignment the last two years champion Taylor Hockenberry from Mars will try to win a third straight title in AAA Saturday. But the new girls AA champion is from Beaver and she is Sophomore Ava Talorico.
Talorico led from wire to wire easily taking the crown. In 2016 she finished 4th and was the leading scorer returning for 2017. She won with a score of 392.35 beating her score form last year by 30.9 points.
Anna Vogt a Sophomore from Ringgold finished a distant second with a score of 345.75 trailing Talorico by 46.6 points. These two should compete in the next two years as both are young divers. Jamieson Elia a Junior from Blackhawk was third scoring 288.35.

Look at the progression of the Laurel High School boys basketball program the past few years, and it is quite evident that the Spartans are now all Locked in.
Ken Locke is in his fifth season as the Spartans’ coach. The program without much history has made giant strides the past few years. Now this year, the Spartans are doing things never seen before at the school.
In the latest MSA Sports WPIAL rankings that came out at the beginning of the week, Laurel was No. 3 in Class 2A. But that was before Laurel knocked off No. 1 Sewickley Academy this past Tuesday. Laurel heads into Friday night’s big game against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with a perfect 9-0 record. The Spartans are one of only four teams in the WPIAL with a perfect record.
