WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 10/3
October 5, 2014
There was a definite chill in the air for the first Saturday of high school football in October here in the 2014 season as Friday showers gave way to a drop in the mercury on S-s-s-s-s-aturday. But the cooler than usual temperatures did not slow down these Fearless Foursome who helped direct their teams to victory to close the door on Week 6.

Hometown Volleyball Match Recap – Chartiers-Houston
September 9, 2014
The Buccaneers of Chartiers-Houston took the victory in straight sets (25-11, 25-23, 25-23) over the Avella Eagles Tuesday night. Led by head coach Sean Cleary, the Lady Bucs were able to win all three games despite some sloppy play at times.
In the beginning, it was a one-sided match. Avella had some communication problems and Char-Houston took advantage. Lex Tatano provided the offense with her powerful serve taking the team on a 6 point and 8 point run. The Bucs took care of business, yet games two and three were a different story.

WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 9/6
September 7, 2014
It was a very quiet Saturday in Week Two, made louder by those wild and crazy zebras. Somehow, someway, there was a miscommunication with the game officials for the California at Avella Class A Tri-County South Conference contest on Friday night. Thus the stars that we gladly point out in the skies from this Second Saturday of the 2014 season go from two to three. Just gazin.

CTK ’14: WPIAL A Tri-County South Conference Preview
August 23, 2014
Respect. The Tri-County South Conference doesn’t have much of it from the rest of WPIAL Class A, and the only way to earn it is to “show up” in the postseason.
The much-maligned Tri-County South is 0-12 in playoff games the past three years. Since the 2007 season, the only Tri-County South teams to win a playoff game are Monessen and Beth-Center. But Monessen is no longer in the conference.
The last Tri-County South team to win a playoff game other than Beth-Center or Monessen was Jefferson-Morgan in 2006.
Will things change this year? Well, Beth-Center looks to be the cream of the crop again, but some other teams have some experienced players. Here is an overview of the Tri-County South:

Jared Walker and his brother, Zach, brought a lot of people to the ground during football season. The Walkers led undefeated South Fayette in tackles.
In the winter, the Walkers are pretty good at taking more people down to the mat.
You’ll have to think long and hard to come up with two brothers in the WPIAL who were so good at football – and so good at wrestling.
Jared Walker, a South Fayette junior, is the No. 1-ranked WPIAL Class AA wrestler in the 170-pound division. He entered the week with a 7-0 record.
Zach Walker, a senior, is No. 1-ranked at 195 pounds. He was 6-1 entering the week. The Walkers are two of the main reasons South Fayette is the MSA Sports’ No. 3-ranked team in Class AA.

Moon’s running game went from Colaianni to Cole, and now everything is cool with the Tigers on the ground.Moon is in the WPIAL football playoffs this season for the first time since 2006, and one of the main reasons for the turnaround is Cole Blake, a senior running back who is the fifth-leading rusher in the WPIAL heading into the playoffs.Blake has made a name for himself, rushing for 1,457 yards. He set a school record with 342 yards in one game. But Blake’s story is interesting in that he only got a chance to be the featured back this year because of an injury. Suffice to say, Blake has run with that chance.

Friday night in Week Nine. One last chance for ALL of the teams around the WPIAL to shine. Some will move on to the Highway to Heinz in the hopes of making this a lucky 13th season in the 21st century. Others who will not move on just wanted to close out the campaign on a high note. Here are the players who sang like soprano's Friday night with large performances that had the crowd calling for an encore. Trevor Morrow - Upper St. Clair

In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs.
