Chicks Picks – Week Ten – 2014
October 30, 2014
Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season.  Chick’s Picks attended the wedding of a dear friend last weekend.  The lavish affair featured dinner entertainment by a celebrity musician.  Awestruck by his performance, Chick’s Picks was determined to find an opportunity in this intimate setting to personally applaud the star. As guests began to mingle after dinner, Chick’s Picks spotted the celebrity packing up his equipment and headed his way.  Before she could get out a formal introduction, though, the celebrity interrupted, “Wow, is that really you Chick’s Picks?  You’re my idol!  No one can prognosticate quite like you!”

PIHL Notebook – 2014-2015 Class B & C Preview
October 27, 2014
Welcome to another installment of “PIHL Notebook” as we wrap up our season preview four-pack with a look inside what used to be the Open Class. Instead, it will now be known as Varsity Division II, divided into Class B and Class C. It bears mentioning, as touched upon in our feature on the new alignment on October 6, only co-op teams are allowed in Division II. Class B is the cream of the crop, at least on paper. Defending Nailers Cup champion Harbor Creek headlines things, joined by four semifinalists from the 2014 Open Class Playoffs. Also in the mix is a Penn-Trafford squad down from Class AAA, a brand new “B Team” from Upper St. Clair, and a blast from the past in Meadville.

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 10/3
October 4, 2014
While forecasts for stormy weather fortunately were off, some of the performances on the first wet Friday of the 2014 campaign were spot on terrific. While one super star put his name on top of two district passing records, another made a big announcement on where his future splash plays will take place before going out and enjoying another big night. On a cloudy evening, the stars were shining bright as we check out the best of the best on the first Friday night of WPIAL football in October. Jordan Whitehead - Central Valley

WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for 9/26
September 27, 2014
We hit the midway point of the 2014 WPIAL football regular season with points a plenty. Offenses around the district continue to amass record setting numbers with good solid defenses creeping closer to the endangered species list. Friday night saw 12 teams score over 50 points and five of those teams eclipsed the 60 point plateau. And that doesn't even include the traditional 70+ point total for Clairton. With those mind-numbing numbers, here are some of the top performers from the Fifth Friday of the season. Connor Slomka - Pine-Richland

CTK ’14: WPIAL AAAA Foothills Conference Preview
August 12, 2014
The Gateway Gators have finished first or second in the Foothills Conference for six consecutive seasons. Don’t look for Gateway near the top of the conference this year. That’s because Gateway is no longer in the conference. The Gators dropped from Class AAAA to AAA for this season. The Foothills Conference, though, still has nine teams. Plum was moved from the Southeastern to the Foothills. McKeesport is the defending conference champion. The Tigers lost a number of key players, but still should be in the top of the conference. Many are pointing toward Penn-Trafford as the team to beat. Here is a look at the Foothills: ALTOONA MOUNTAIN LIONS

CTK 2013 – WPIAL Quad-A Foothills Conference Preview
August 13, 2013
The Foothills Conference is made up of nine schools who played a lot of young players in 2012. While that led to a competitive conference and some exciting football a year ago, it also led to an 1-6 record in the postseason with only conference champion Gateway picking up a postseason victory in the 2012 WPIAL football playoffs. There is an effort up and down the conference to shed that ‘weak link’ reputation the Foothills has when compared to the other Class AAAA conferences. In the 32-year history of WPIAL Quad-A football, Foothills Conference teams have captured gold only four times: Gateway in 1986, Connellsville in 1991, McKeesport in 1994 and only once since the turn of the century, when the Tigers won it again in 2005.

Scholastic Notebook – 09/21/2012
September 21, 2012
After seeing Clairton clobber Monessen, 52-7, on Thursday night, it makes you wonder if this is the same Clairton team that struggled to beat Chartiers-Houston, 22-20, on the opening night of the season? It most certainly is not the same team – at least defensively. Clairton was without 10 players the first three weeks of the season. The players missed time because of grades or attendance issues from last school year, and the players returned to the team for the Monessen game. Only two of the players who missed the first three weeks were starters. But still, the return of the group of players changed Clairton.
