The Penn-Trafford softball team will be honored later this month for winning a PIAA championship in June.

On Sept. 18, the Warriors will travel to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in Harrisburg to be recognized on the floor as Class 5A state champions. The team will have a guided tour of the building and will receive a proclamation.

The Warriors were invited by Rep. George Dunbar but had to delay the visit because so many players still were participating in the travel softball season.

The Warriors downed Lampeter-Strasburg, 5-3, to win the title at Penn State.

The Hempfield softball team also received the honor in recent years. In fact, the practice almost became old hat after the Spartans won three straight PIAA titles in the state’s largest classification.

“It is all very humbling as well as exciting,” Penn-Trafford coach Denny Little said. “I don’t think the magnitude has sunk in with me and the girls yet. It certainly put us on the map as a program.”

Also, the Warriors will serve as grand marshals of the annual Penn Township Fall Festival on Sept. 21-23.

Penn-Trafford went 23-2 and won the Section 1-5A title with a 14-0 mark. After getting roughed up in the WPIAL semifinals, the Warriors won five straight games to bring home the school’s first state team title in any sport.

The Warriors received championship rings before Friday’s home football game against Gateway.
