Home cookin was the rule of thumb in the opening round of the 2010 WPIAL Football Playoffs. 23 of the 32 teams that hosted First Round games were winners and are moving on to the Quarterfinals. Here are recaps from most of the eight games in each classification.

There was a time when every WPIAL football team played ten games. It was called the regular season. Since the district went to a nine-week regular season, non-playoff football teams have a choice whether they want to play a tenth game. Sadly, most do not.

Scholastic Notebook – 11/05/2010

Ten teams have the perfect outlook on the WPIAL playoffs. The playoffs start Friday night and 10 WPIAL teams enter the postseason with perfect 9-0 records. A year ago, not one team made it through the WPIAL playoffs with an undefeated record. Only three years ago, all four WPIAL champs (Serra, Jeannette, Thomas Jefferson and Central Catholic) were undefeated.

WPIAL/Pittsburgh City League Week 10 Friday Scores

While the Pittsburgh City League concludes its regular season this weekend, it's postseason time for the WPIAL. The orange cones were taken away, the ribbon was cut and the curtain was raised on the Highway to Heinz...the 2010 WPIAL Football Playoffs on Friday night. While teams like Ringgold, Deer Lakes, Ellwood City and Cornell saw memorable seasons come to an end, 32 teams have advanced to the Quarterfinals...ten of them thanks to huge efforts by these gridiron performances.

2010 Turns Out to be Year of the Tigers in WPIAL Field Hockey

When it comes to WPIAL Girls Field Hockey Playoffs, 2010 turned out to be the Year of the Tigers. Both the North Allegheny Tigers in Class AAA and the Ellis School Tigers in Class AA captured district gold Monday night with victories at Fox Chapel High School. Here are the short but sweet results from the two round playoffs in both classifications.

Chicks Picks – Week 10 – 2010

Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season. After months on the campaign trail, Chicks Picks did not get to celebrate an Election Day victory after all. District College Football Preview for Saturday, November 6th

Conference titles could be decided in the Northeast, the PSAC and PAC on Saturday. The big game focus will be on Joe Walton Stadium as Robert Morris looks for its first title since 2000, in Erie as Mercyhurst looks to steal the PSAC-West from Cal and in Waynesburg where the Yellow Jackets battle nationally ranked and two-time PAC champion Thomas More.

WPIAL Boys Soccer Semifinals Tuesday Recaps

The WPIAL held six games on Tuesday night to set up the Super Soccer Saturday finals for the boys. The many surprises that have occurred in the girls tournaments didn't cross over to this gender as most of the top boys seeds are headed to the finals. North Allegheny Back On Top of WPIAL AAA Girls Field Hockey World Again

North Allegheny defeated Fox Chapel 2-1 in overtime to win the AAA field hockey championship Monday night at Fox Chapel High School. The title is the 11th district crown in 14 years, but first for the Tigers since 2007. Fox Chapel came into the game with a 15-0-1 record and only gave up four goals on the year.

Ellis School Flexes Girl Power in AA Field Hockey Title Win Over GCC

The Ellis School Tigers captured their fourth WPIAL championship in the past nine years by defeating Greensburg Central Catholic 6-1 Monday night at Fox Chapel High School. The Centurions opened up the scoring first with 23:18 left in the first half when Hope Williams scored.

Now with 16 teams left in each classification, we here at MSA Sports will do what the WPIAL football steering committee will do on Monday, we will seed the teams. When you rank teams, you put them in the order of best to worst, 1 through 16.
