MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Boys Basketball Playoff Teams 2015
Here are our final rankings for the 2014-2015 WPIAL boys basketball season. As in the past at the end of the regular season, we rank all of the playoff teams, not just the top ten. We also don't rank, we seed them like the WPIAL does. It is not a true ranking since the steering committee tries to avoid Preliminary and First Round matchups of teams in the same section, so sometimes lower teams are shuffled about to avoid section rivals meeting early on in the brackets.  Here is our version of the February Frenzy and the Seeding Shuffle for all 73 of the WPIAL boys basketball playoff field. Tune in Tuesday night at 7:00pm on MSAsports.net for the announcement and analysis of the actual brackets during the 2015 WPIAL Basketball Playoff Pairings Show.

Franklin Regional Repeats as PIAA AAA State Wrestling Champs
February 7, 2015
Last weekend at the WPIAL Championships, Franklin Regional had to win both of their matches by winning the last bout. At the PIAA Championships in Hershey, it wasn’t the last bout of the night, but it still took a pair of tight wins for the Panthers to repeat as PIAA Champs. After defeating Spring Ford 49-18 and Council Rock South 45-13, Franklin Regional, ranked #2 in the state, would take on the #1 ranked team in Bethlehem Catholic in the semi-finals. After jumping out to a 9-4 lead, Franklin Regional would get upset at 152 pounds. Senior Josh Maruca would drop a 3-2 decision to Michael Labriola. Although Josh Shields would come out to pickup a technical fall win, the loss by Maruca kept the marginal lead to seven at 14-7.

2015 PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs Results
For only the second time in history, a WPIAL team has repeated as team state wrestling champions. Following in the footsteps of the 2012 and the 2013 Canon-McMillan teams, Franklin Regional followed up their 2014 state title with another PIAA Class AAA crown with a slim victory over District 3 champion Cumberland Valley. The Panthers are only the sixth team from District 7 to win a PIAA team wrestling championship in the 17 years of the event. North Allegheny picked up four wins over two days to advance to the Class AAA Consolation Finals where they fell big to Bethlehem Catholic. In Class AA, District 3 champion Boiling Springs captured their first ever team wrestling state gold Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey.

Scholastic Notebook – 02/06/2015
February 6, 2015
Penn State football coach James Franklin lost out on the top player in the WPIAL class of 2015 when Central Valley’s Jordan Whitehead signed with Pitt. Other than Whitehead, Penn State had plenty of success in the WPIAL. At least more than the Nittany Lions have had in recent history. Penn State signed four players from the WPIAL this season. That might not seem like a lot, but it is more than the past four classes combined. In fact, only twice in the past 10 years has Penn State landed four or more players from the WPIAL. In 2010, Penn State signed five WPIAL players and four in 2007. Two of the past four years, Penn State did not sign one WPIAL player.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/30/2015
January 30, 2015
With a little more than a week left in the regular season, Aliquippa and Sewickley Academy are the only two undefeated teams in WPIAL boys basketball at 18-0. For both, it is a return to glory this season. Aliquippa has a rich basketball tradition, but the Quips hit a rough patch from 2010-13, compiling a record below .500 for three consecutive seasons under coach Bobby Williams. Things started to return to normal last year under first-year coach Nick Lackovich when the Quips finished 20-7. Now, things are terrific at Aliquippa and this could be a team for the ages at the Beaver County school. It’s not known when the last time was Aliquippa finished the regular season with a perfect record. It has been at least four decades.
