Now that the 2011 WPIAL Basketball Playoffs are in the books, we look ahead to the tip off on the Highway to Happy Valley. the 2011 PIAA Basketball Playoffs are set to start with Preliminary Round games on Tuesday, March 8th. Here are the WPIAL boys and girls teams that already have qualified and how they will be seeded coming out of District 7.

There will be a new champion in Boys Class AAAA and Girls Class AAA after Wednesday nights postseason action. Chartiers Valley and Gateway boys along with North Catholic girls return to Battle on the Bluff for district gold, while Mount Lebanon boys and New Castle girls turn their attention to the upcoming state playoffs.

With Samantha Pickens and her three year stranglehold on the WPIAL Girls Class AAA diving title gone to the University of Arizona, there was opportunity today at Pine-Richland High School. In addition to Pickens, all of the top five finishers from 2010 had graduated. Seizing the opportunity was Lauren Lamendola from Pine-Richland.

WPIAL Basketball Playoff Recaps for Saturday, February 26th
After a quiet opening round, the upsets kept coming Saturday in a wild Quarterfinals weekend around the WPIAL. Two more top-seeds, Shaler in Boys AAAA and Vincentian Academy in Girls A were ousted in round two while a couple of other high seeds either survived scares or were eliminated from the chase.

SSA’s Geoff Alexander Golden For a 4th Time in 2011 WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships
The 2011 WPIAL Class AA Individual Wrestling tournament had a bit of a rhythm to it Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School, with many wrestlers duplicating previous gold medal victories. The story of the night was the 4th WPIAL championship for Shady Side Academy's Geoff Alexander, who became the 20th wrestler in WPIAL history to win gold in all four years of his high school career.

For the second year in a row, Uniontown senior Jonathan Jones walked away golden from the WPIAL AA Diving Championships Friday afternoon at South Park High School. Riverside’s Jenny Ard is The Golden Girl in WPIAL Girls AA Diving Finals
For Jenny Ard, this has been a long time coming. Ard, the senior, has finished in fourth place in the WPIAL AA Diving Championships two years in a row, but was able to overtake Kathleen Dunst during the final round of competition to bring the gold medal back to Riverside Friday afternoon at South Park High School.

WPIAL Basketball Playoff Recaps for Thursday, February 24th

Finally, some surprises. On the fourth day of the opening round of the WPIAL basketball playoffs, three double seed teams from girls Class AAA advanced to the second round with wins over the 3rd, 4th and 6th seeds. Plus, 2nd-seed in Mount Lebanon in boys Class AAAA needed double overtime to advance to Round Two.

Hempfield Strikes Gold, Sweeps Boys and Girls WPIBL Bowling Titles
It was a clean sweep on the alleys for Hempfield as both the boys and girls bowling teams captured titles in the 2011 WPIBL team championships. On Wednesday, the Spartans' boys captured gold for the first time since 2003 while on Thursday, the Hempfield girls cruised to a fourth consecutive bowling crown and their sixth championship in nine years.
