Shady Side Academy Golden in PIAA Class AA Boys Swimming; West A Girls Runner-Up

After finishing close for so many years, the Shady Side Academy boys team has finally reached the top of the state Class AA swimming mountain. The Indians swam their way to a state title Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell University by beating runner-up Fairview by 27 points. Indiana was the only other WPIAL team to finish in the top ten overall with 8th place.

PIHL Penguins Cup Semifinals Recaps for Tuesday, March 15th
Two defending champions in high school hockey have registered victories on Semifinals Tuesday while another has seen its hopes of more frozen gold come to an end at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. Canon-McMillan is still alive in an effort to repeat as Class AAA champs after knocking out Bethel Park while two-time defending champion Mars took care of business against Westmont-Hilltop.

After winning four WPIAL titles a week ago, Franklin Regional senior Nico Megaludis had one more gold medal he wanted to add to his mantel. After finishing third as a freshman, Megaludis rattled off two straight PIAA championships before this weekend.

Four WPIAL Class AA Wrestlers Are Golden in PIAA Championships
After winning 12 of 14 titles a week ago in the Southwest Regional Tournament in Johnstown, the WPIAL had a strong showing in the PIAA Tournament at Hershey. Six wrestlers made it to the finals, with four coming home with state gold, and picking up a total of 24 medals.

One top high school basketball player has returned from a concussion and another important player might be returning. West Mifflin senior C.J. Hester, who averages 18 points a game, played in a PIAA Class AAA play-in game Tuesday night and was a key factor in the Titans' 66-36 victory against Bradford. Hester had 17 points and 15 rebounds.

PIHL Penguin Cup Playoff Recaps for Wednesday, March 9th

While ten of eleven higher seeds moved on to the Final Four on Quarterfinals Wednesday in the PIHL playoffs, most of them did so with a mighty struggle, including one overtime game and one double overtime thriller. Plus the one upset as the 3rd-seed in Class A is eliminated.

Gateway, Montour, Monessen and Vincentian Win 2011 WPIAL Boys Basketball Titles

2011 turns into the yeaqr of virgin winners. With Gateway beating Chartiers Valley in Class AAAA, Montour beating top-seed South Fayette in Class AAA and Vincentian Academy taking care of Lincoln Park in Class A, championship weekend sees three school lift the golden ball for the first time in school history.

Shaler, Blackhawk, Seton-LaSalle and North Catholic Are Golden Girls in 2011 WPIAL Girls Basketball
Mount Lebanon and Jeannette entered championship weekend searching for more gold. The Blue Devils won WPIAL AAAA crowns in 2009 and 2010 while the Jayhawks captured AA gold last winter. But there would be no repeats in 2011. Shaler knocked out Mount Lebanon to win their second girls title and first in 31 years.

John Marshall Edges Kiski Area To Win 2011 PIHL Open Class Championship
A third seed and a fourth seed bucked the odds and captured Open Class titles. John Marshall won the Nailers Cup while Kiski Area captured a second straight Chiefs Cup in overtime. The Monarchs then went on to beat the Cavaliers in the Open Cup Title Game Sunday night.
