WPIAL/City League Week 1 Saturday Football Scores 2011

The curtain rose for most WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League teams on Friday night. Then it was time for ten more district teams to lace up their spikes for the first time in 2011. Three games took place under the hot sun in the afternoon while the evening haze was the backdrop for two more scholastic gridiron contests.

Sterling Marte Sets Record in Altoona Curve Win at Bowie Monday

Aaron Pribanic's six innings of one-run ball combined with a four-run first inning was enough to lift the Curve to a, 5-1, series-opening win over the Bowie Baysox on Monday night at Prince George's Stadium. Starling Marte went 3-for-5 to pass Nate McLouth and become the franchise leader for hits in a season with his single in the seventh inning.

In dedication to Clairton's school colors, maybe they should change the name of this Class A section to the Black AND Orange Hills Conference. The Bears have dominated the WPIAL and the state in recent years, but they have really done a number in the Black Hills since moving over from the Eastern Conference in 2008.

Don’t look for the trend to stop this season.Ford City and Shady Side Academy are pegged by many coaches as the teams to beat in the Allegheny Conference. A year ago, Ford City finished first and Shady Side Academy fourth.

CTK 2011 – WPIAL AA MIDWESTERN Conference Preview

As much as the teams change in the MAC, some things remain the same...Aliquippa, Beaver Falls and Beaver are all favored in the conference going into 2011.But will there be another feel-good story from the Midwestern this season? In 2009, Ellwood City ended a looong losing streak, then qualified for the playoffs in 2010.
