WPIAL Boys Soccer and Girls Volleyball Recaps

North Hills Malone Sisters Finish 1-2 in Girls AAA X-Country Finals
No major surprises at the WPIAL Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships, just lots of wind, rain and mud. The competitors battled challenging conditions and a 3.1 mile course that had very few blades of grass remaining at the end of a long day at Cooper’s Lake.

Peters Twp and Sewickley Academy Win PIAA Girls Team Tennis Crowns

Three of the four finalists in the 2011 PIAA Girls Team Tennis Championships were from District 7 as 2011 WPIAL champions Peters Township in AAA and Sewickley Academy in AA became 2011 PIAA Girls Team Tennis champions Saturday in Hershey.

Chicks Picks – 10/27/2011
Welcome to Week 9 of the high school football season. Friends of Chick’s Picks held the first annual Pumpkin Carve-nival this week to get in the Halloween spirit.  The Pumpkin Carve-nival, as it had been dubbed, was not your average pumpkin-carving party.  Prizes and pride were on the line, and Chick’s Picks was determined to take home gold in every category.

Two conference titles could be decided on Saturday as Slippery Rock tries to sew up the PSAC West crown while Westminster tries to knock off three time champion Thomas More. The Coal Bowl takes places as well between Cal and IUP with the loser being knocked out of playoff contention.

Four WPIAL boys golfers finished 1-2-3 and 4 after the final round of the 2011 PIAA Individual Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Club on Tuesday, but it was Garrett Browning of West Allegheny who was the golden boy...again.

2011 WPIAL FIELD HOCKEY PLAYOFFS
Three of the four finalists this year have DOMINATED the district field hockey playing field since the sports inception in 1994. Between 2010 champions North Allegheny in AAA, Ellis School in AA and Shady Side Academy, the three programs have won 25 of a possible 31 WPIAL field hockey titles. The other finalist, Penn-Trafford is the new kid on the golden block.

Chalk.  That is how MOST of the opening round in the 2011 WPIAL Girls Volleyball Playoffs went on Wednesday and Thursday. Only one Class AA and two Class A lower seed teams were able to pull off the opening round upset, thus making for form great second round action.

Saturdays Scholastic Starz – 10/23/2011

A busy Friday night of high school football action in Week Eight left only four WPIAL games to be played on the next to the last Saturday of the regular season. Two teams were looking to secure the top-seed in their conference while another was trying to secure a playoff berth. That left five teams to play the role of spoiler or to just play for pride.

District College Football Recap – 10/23/2011
Some great action in Week 8 of the college football slate. Slippery Rock remains on top of the PSAC West and sends Lock Haven into the conference history books. Wins by Cal and IUP set up the Coal Bowl next week, both teams are still alive for NCAA playoff berths.
